I think the payroll would end up around $5 mil higher than budgeted in this thread, but close enough to be in reach. And we hit every off season target.
Two corner OFs bats, without sacrificing much defense.
Back up plan/RH platoon bat for 1B.
More offense from our catchers, without sacrificing much defense.
Veteran reliever.
Protect nearly every prospect.
Retain our rotational depth.
The only negative is that it leaves us with no bullpen depth. We'd have only eight relievers on the 40 man....only 18 total pitchers, and Vargas can't be considered for 2022.
I'm not sure the FO will consider beginning a season with only 17 available pitchers on the 40 man.
There is a HUGE difference in the roster being setup in November and the roster of players at the start/ then end of Spring Training.
Having only 17 or 18 pitchers is not an issue in mid/ late November. There will continue to be roster churn and more arms will be eventually added before the season starts.
