The more I watch Wilson, the less I like him. He’s twitchy as all hell, but he runs sloppy routes, and I just don’t trust him to out athletic pro corners. And run go and post against unathletic big 10 safetys.
As it stands, of the frequently discussed top guys, Wilson would easily be the one I’d be most upset about. I don’t think he’s on the same planet as Olave, who I think is equally athletic, but from day one will run routes and track balls at an elite level.
I think Wilson’s early success is going to come in space on screens/bubbles, and in motion to creat advantages. You’d hope with his athleticism that he could be an X, but I’m guessing his measurements aren’t going to be much different than Jahan Dotson, and he’s going to struggle on the outside against corners who are just as big and fast as he is until he drastically improves his footwork. He had a really terrific in route against Oregon, but it’s a route that he’d never even be able to run in the NFL because of how long it took to break.
Burks is your standard X- he’s going to be big and fast and out run corners deep when they can’t press him. Make no mistakes; he is not a slot guy, and he is not a flanker.
I think Olave is both athletic, and good enough at a route tree to play all three WR positions. IMO, if you’re trying to draft your “number one”, I overvalue the athleticism and route ability to play from all three much more than the ability to play in space.
