I love the guy and love having him on the team, but as with Lindor, it's a numbers game.
Spoiler: the numbers are going to win.

What names am I calling him? I've never said he didn't work hard and he's an incredibly likable personality.

Discussing the circumstance objectively isn't disrespecting anyone, but oh well.

Telling a starting playoff shortstop that he didn’t earn his position is unquestionably disrespectful.

Just not a good opinion.

Is he the starter? I thought we didn't know? Is it any more disrespectful to suggest that the starter could/should be supplanted?

Now you're attempting to put words in my mouth and twist the conversation into something it wasn't. Never did I attack Amed's character or question his qualities as a teammate. You can miss me with that BS. To me anyway, this conversation is revolved around the idea of assembling the best Cleveland Guardians team. That's it and nothing more.

Wow! This isn't starting an argument is it dipshit? lol

I'm not arguing with AZ. It was a discussion and I made it quite clear in my initial response that I didn't understand what he was saying. Then he didn't understand what I was saying. I hardly call that an argument, but you do you.

It's fun to mess with you as well! Lol

I agree.

I also find it hard to believe we find a suitor for Amed at this point.

I'm almost hoping for an injury at this point. I don't want to go 162 games of Amed at SS while Arias, Rocchio and Freeman wither on the vine.yeah
Yeah, having a shortstop with the third most hits the AL really stinks.

We know he had a lot of hits.

We also know that, even with that high number of hits, he only came out about average.

His deficiencies on defense, drawing walks, and hitting for power are all big issues, along with this being the last year of his contract.

Amed will be on the team on opening day.
It comes down to balancing the positives and negatives.

On the negative side:
  1. Mixed offensive results.
  2. Average defensive SS. (Maybe less than average with no shift.)
  3. 4th highest paid player on the team.
  4. FA after this season. (Will not be offered a QO because he might accept it).
  5. Has multiple possible replacements in the system. Younger, cheaper, maybe better,
On the positive side:
  1. One of the best, most aggressive baserunners in all of baseball.
  2. One of the league leaders in Hits.
  3. Veteran who can help a contending team.
  4. A team leader for all the young players on the roster.
  5. His #1 booster is the best player on the team - JRam. (Who took less money to stay here.)
Right now, the only people that count in this balancing act, Guards management, see more positives.

The other reason that Rosario may be on our team the whole year is if Rocchio is the heir-apparent at SS. Why even mess with Freeman and Arias moving Gimenez on way or the other if they think Rocchio is the guy to start 2024 at SS. But, if that was the case, I would have had Arias playing more 1st this year as a super utility guy than getting Bell or traded one of Arias/Freeman to free up room.

I'm not sure Arias has tremendous value if you move him from short to first base.

I wish Amed's speed translated to playing a solid center field. That would solve a lot of our problems.

Right now, I feel like the organization is being snakebit a little by not having trade opportunities. Ideally, we'd trade either Amed, or guys like Freeman and/or Arias. But without that trade option to relieve pressure, we instead get this constipation at the major league level.

3rd most hits doesn’t mean much when most of them are singles and that’s all he does to get on base. Though singles are more impactful than walks in my opinion! A lot of these stat people like to argue a walk is just as good as a single but I don’t agree at all.

But that’s how you end up being 3rd in the AL in hits but 48th in OPS and 45th in on base in the AL, down around guys like Kiner Falefa who Yankees fans want gone and Elvis Andrus who can’t get a job.

The big question IMO is if he does get "passed" by someone like Rocchio or Freeman or Arias, is do we make him a part-time player specializing in hitting lefties (potentially with some time in OF and/or 1B) and also keep him around as insurance for the rest of the year. I would've thought the answer is no unless his play degrades, but seeing all this about his "team leadership" and whatnot it makes me think maybe not because his trade value isn't exactly high, and he probably will be stuck in the lineup even if it doesn't seem exactly logical.

Regarding the repositioning, I guess this is more of a Rocchio specific thing - I imagine Freeman and especially Arias would take the 1B / OF positions instead of Amed while he just stays at SS.

I doubt you can find anybody with a true understanding of statistics that would argue that a walk is as good as a hit.

If you look at how each stat correlates to runs scored, the order is as follows:
OPS
SLG
OBP
BA

OPS reigns supreme because it not only includes a measure of how often a guy gets on base vs making an out (OBP), but it also factors in how they’re getting on base (SLG).
