2018-2019 Tank Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’ll be interesting to see this team next year provided we have a top two pick and keep love. I think if that happens, along with our young players’ development, we are out of the bottom for sure next year.

Which is why I would consider sitting Love the rest of the year, or severely limit his time.
There is zero reason for this team to win meaningless games.
Tank, hopefully get a top 2 and they’re off.

It is fine to be optimistic about getting a top two pick, but the odds are against any team getting one of the top two picks. Tanking is not what it used to be.

I think the added the 4th pick to the lottery really changes how you have to think about tanking. I actually think adding that pick to the mix just makes teams at the bottom more inclined to tank especially with the lower odds. Usually there are 4 to 8 players that teams see as the top tier prospects. The bottom 3 usually were guaranteed to get one of those guys even if there were only 4 or 5 of them, now not so much. Teams will fight for that number 1 odds just so they can secure a top 5 pick. Windy said in a podcast this week most teams feel it's 5 or 6 in that top tier this year in the draft.

That is an interesting way to look at it. Guaranteeing a top 5 or 6 pick by being one of the two worst teams. That is a realistic approach. All the talk of getting a top two pick by some, while possible, is a low percentage play. Anyway, Cavs are likely to have the 3rd or 4th worst record after TT and Love return. Unless of course TT is traded to San Antonio for Toronto's #1 and Gasol.

It’s not. But finishing with the worst guarantees a top 5 pick, bottom 2 a top 6...if that’s correct, it is worth tanking to increase your odds for the top as well as the floor pick.

Time to gas up the tank. It's deadline week fellas. Good start with jettisoning the biggest hymen...err Hood that I've ever seen.

What concerns me is that Adam Silver may think the knicks need the #1 pick and that ends up happening. Still we need to do what it takes to lose games down the stretch right? Glancing at the final month of games on our schedule, it looks like we can lose most of them. We play the Suns on April 1, we need Larry hoisting 3's in that one. Love will be back and gone again by then.
If Zion could land here, it'd be too good to be true.

You think there is any team desperate enough for Kevin Love to give up a first rounder?

Also wouldn’t mind kicking the tires on taking some bad San Antonio money off the books in exchange for a 1st rounder....

I mean how about Alec Burks and Tristan for Gasol, Patty Mills and a 1st rounder...

Burks expiring basically clears 12 mil for the spurs going into next season

Yup totally agree

1. Tristan straight up for Gasol and the Toronto 1st from San Antonio.
2. Burks straight up for Brandon Knight and Houston's 2020 1st.
3. Kevin Love's back is "flaring up" again, looks like he is gonna sit out the season.

And that should pretty much lock us down to the worst record as long as Sexton gets the majority of the playing time over Delly. Trade JR in the offseason, Clarkson and Henson at the deadline next season.

Next year to start the year:

PG: Sexton/Delly/Clarkson
SG: Cedi/Nwaba/Stauskas
SF: Zion/Adel/Blossomgame
PF: Love/Nance
C: Zizic/Henson

Is it worth getting rid of TT for a pick that ends up being #25-30? Also is Gasol worth taking on as a contract, I bet he will want a buy out or he will retire. I'd rather have a contract we can flip next season.

I think Burks for Knight and a 1st is a good trade but there some opportunity cost with that trade vs JR plus whatever 2nd round picks it take to get Knight and a 1st round pick. I think Burks has the largest market of the players we have and JR might have the lowest. Houston might be the only place that will take JR.

I'm also hoping Clarkson can be moved this year. He will have some negative effect on our draft position. He isn't on a bad contract and I doubt his value changes much in a year. He is a guy that might win us a couple games and the value of that draft position can't be made up in his value. The Mavs gave up a 2019 first that will most likely end up top 10 to move up from #5 to #3. Cash consideration can move two 2nd round picks to a late 1st, which is the difference in value we are looking in Clarkson from this year to next.

If you are trading for first round picks and are not just dumping a contract you likely need to defer the pick a couple years and negotiate for no protections. The 25th pick in the draft is about the same as 2nd round picks. He is unlikely to ever matter to becoming a non-tanking team.

Alex Burks and Jordan Clarkson
For
John Wall and Washington's unprotected 1st next year...

Would you do it?
