2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think they concluded he wont get his off court shit together in Cleveland, they are trying to have him hit rock bottom and wake up. The fact he is still in the g-league and not playing for a team in almost last place is proof he still has a long way to go to get his shit together or he would be playing in Houston.

Yeah not like Houston are a contender, like us they are a bottom team. If they though KPJ was in a good mental spot surely they would have called him up by now

If it was a situation where they were trying to mend the relationship with him, then it still doesn't make sense to do something that's likely to piss him off. It doesn't matter if the Cavs are in the right morally or not...at the end of the day, they spent a draft pick and lost him for nothing, and that's on them.

Fair enough to blame them for making that pick in the first place. That decision - no matter whether you think it was a good move or bad - is solely their responsibility.

I still don't get this. Are you saying they should have taken the newly arrived veteran who is going to be in the rotation, and put his locker in skid row just to appease a badly-behaved second year player who isn't even practicing with the team??

My guess is that every other player on the team would have had a giant "WTF?!?!" had that happened especially since other players already had complained about KPJ.

Dude wildly overreacted to something completely routine/expected by everyone else. That's solely on him.

No way can or should any team walk on such obvious eggshells to appease a guy who refuses to behave as anything remotely resembling a professional.

The point isn't to coddle him for the sake of coddling him. The point is to try, within reason, to maintain a working relationship with the player for practical reasons (e.g. maintaining trade value). From that standpoint, what's so hard about explaining that you're going to move his locker before you do it? At the end of the day, if he blows up, that's something that can only hurt the team regardless of who's fault it is. So why not try to avoid that?

Wish we got more for him, but this isn't a guy you will ever be able to rely on. I think his future is as a sixth man, I doubt any NBA team would feel comfortable giving Kevin any more responsibility than that. I think it's a waste of time and energy to lament losing this guy, he has a lot of work to do to make himself a good person.

I don’t think he necessarily needs to become “a good person” just needs to become a reliable player who isn’t involved in off court nonsense. This is just my opinion but I feel like a lot of athletes wouldn’t fit the definition of “good people”. They all profit off signature shoes deals made by children in the 3rd world, speak out about social issues as long as it makes them money, thus ignoring human rights issues in countries like China. Many of them have cheated on wives, blow money on hookers and stripclubs. What they do in their personal lives shouldn’t matter as long as they arnt committing violent crimes, KPJ just needs to get his head straight and clean up his act.

KPJ thinks you're all bitches.

I think you're 100% correct. He likely thinks exactly that.

He also likely thinks the Cavs were all bitches, the rest of the NBA was a bunch of bitches for not drafting him higher, and a bunch of bitches again for not trading for him when he became available. Everyone affiliated with the Rockets organization who doesn't want him inserted in the starting lineup immedietely are all bitches too.

In fact, I'd guess that his list of people he considers not to be bitches - other than any gang-affiliated buddies - is pretty fucking small.

Several teams gave up on JR Smith for similar type reasons (and I thought JR was an even more talented guy coming into the league). There's a reason USC suspended him and he fell to #30 in the draft. No doubt KPJ is talented but teams can't rely on such a question mark off the court that can blow up at any time. You can't reliably put him in your rotation or pay him a guaranteed contract after his rookie deal expires.

I'm fairly certain KPJ lost any and all trade value after the off court incidents last summer. The locker thing was not smart by the Cavs but highly doubt it effected his trade value since by that point I don't believe he had any. Also after being humbled by the trade I would think that may have led to him agreeing to play in the G League..don't know if he would've been willing to do that while still with the Cavs.

While solid point, JR Smith isnt nearly as much of a head case as KPJ is right now. They wont even let him around a team right now except in the g-league even though Houston could use his talent.

They are tanking. They don't want KPJ winning them any games
