2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The team had just extended him. There‘s no way they wanted to give up on him but they obviously felt they had no choice. Nobody adds to an investment and then dumps it right after unless something has gone seriously wrong.

The obsession with this kid and the idea that the fault was on the team‘s side when it’s clear the entire NBA considers him toxic is ridiculous. He was picked 30th overall for a reason. Nobody offered more than Houston for a reason.

We basically gave him to Houston for nothing, my understanding we picked them because they thought they would be able to best reabilitate him

I don't think the organization did something wrong, I think they got cute. Made a complicated roadmap to getting back on the court, when they should have sent him to the gleague the same way Houston did.

Koby seems like a nice guy, but he is incredibly secretive. That comes off as manipulative.hes been accused of being fake by players before. That's the complaint from the vets on the 2018 team. That's why Andre was pissed about the Allen trade.

And if KPJ had blown up because he was sent to the G-League, Koby would have gotten blasted because he should have known KPJ would react that way.

Meh, NBA is a business. That 2018 team was trash without Lebron. Very obvious from the start. As to manipulative he gave Love that very generous contract, which was in ways a gesture to Love and was showing the rest of the league we reward loyalty.

As for Drummond I really don’t see that as manipulative. We’re a rebuilding team and we had an opportunity to sign an up and coming young center to replace our current center who was having an historically bad offensive year. I think any GM in the league does that trade 10/10 times

Drummond was pissed at the Allen trade because the Cavs traded for a 22 year old Center that will get a lot of his minutes and will clearly be the starter for the next 5 seasons, not because Koby is 'secretive'.

People make a lot of assumptions of what is going on behind the scenes. We are fortunate that we have access to some insider information but let's be clear the insider information we are receiving is at best 2nd hand information where a reporter sees something then tells one of our insiders who tells us. Most of the time there is another layer where a 'front office source' or coach or player says something to a reporter. We are getting a lot of filtered information and by the time it gets to us, it is portrayed in a way someone wants it to be.

The facts of KPJ is that he's a troubled kid with a troubled past. He's a talented basketball player and that has never been in question but everywhere he's gone, he's had problems that are unrelated to his basketball ability. He still a kid, immature and prone to making bad decisions. I hope, for the man's sake, that he accepts the help of those around him and grows as a man to make better decisions.

Sending him to the G League just gave the kid more playing time. I don’t see how that addressed the maturity issues this kid was going through! It was widely reported that the guys in the locker were tired of him. That speaks volumes! As pointed out in another post the kid had a rough life but he has had issues in HS, college and now the pros! Until he addresses his inner demons he’ll be the Josh Gordon of the NBA (never being able to stay on the field of competition)
I wish the kid luck and I hope for his success in the NBA (but more importantly in life)

He's 19 years old.

I was a complete moron too at 19 years old. Fortunately for the team who drafted him you had 4 years of a rookie contract to let him mature before you had to make any kind of significant decision on him. Like Houston, he should have just been sent to the G League.

What does playing in the G League do to address the REAL issues this kid was struggling with? He was up in the Big Dance and had major issues! The kid has other things inside of him he needs to come to grips with.

It gives him time away from the team to mature...

Again I was a complete moron at 19. Arrested twice for underage drinking, ran from the cops... By 23 I was a completely different person. Just because you play in the NBA doesn't mean you're going to instantly be an upstanding member of society. We have to realize these are still literally kids.

I was the same moron at that age, but KPJ is well beyond that. Think Aaron Hernandez level moron.

Whoa ... I know KPJ has some serious issues but as far as I know he hasn’t killed anybody yet.

Surely there are other players in NBA history that are better comparisons. It’s not like there haven’t been a bunch of morons playing the game. Latrell Spreewell choked PJ for example. The player formerly known as Ron Artest had some problems. There’s also Sheed and his unindicted co-conspirators on the legendary Portland Jail Blazers.

Pre murder Aaron Hernandez, he was gang affiliated and refused to unaffiliate. First round talent, 4th round pick for a reason.

Yes its an extreme comparison, but its extreme for a reason. KPJ is legitimately going down the same path. Hernandez is a lesson across all sports that GM's have used. It is why he is no longer a Cav, but the Cav's to extra steps to send him to an organization that cares.

I heard one of his biggest issues was who he was still affiliating with and he refused to not affiliate with them, i am reading between the lines a bit, but come one, athletes affiliate with all types of idiots and teams dont refuse to play them, there is only one type of idiot these days that causes that type of reaction, and no one in his life is telling him he is wrong, not his mom, or family friend.

KPJ isnt just going to throw away his career, he is at risk of throwing away his life. And shame on anyone who thinks the Cavs handled this wrong. They are doing everything to get this man back on the correct path, he just is too hard headed to understand how much he is throwing away. Lets hope he grows up, because Aaron Hernandez didnt grow up until it was much too late.

I have no problem with how the Cavaliers handled this. The fact that most NBA teams passed on him during the draft and weren’t interested when the Cavaliers got rid of him despite his obvious talent were two huge red flags.

I have no illusions that I know much about him. If he hangs around the wrong crowd and acts horribly then he’s certainly heading for big trouble down the road. It just seemed harsh to me to compare KPJ to a convicted murderer at this point.

He is hanging out with the same type of people is my understanding, sometimes reality is harsh. Not saying he will commit murder, but Hernandez was an active member of the Bloods, i think KPJ might have he same problem. You know where it got Hernandez, i am being extreme to hammer home to those that think the Cavs messed up.

There is a huge reason most teams still wanted nothing to do with him despite the talent.

Left the floor with a leg injury. Hope it's not serious. 4pts 4st 2reb 1stl 1blk so far.
