2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
At #30, Porter seems more like the player Dion Waiters thought he was when the Cavs drafted him. That being said, I am so glad to see him contributing the way he is.

The league is going to be in trouble when this kid learns to dribble with both hands.

What’s impressed me most is that he tries hard on defense. He has no idea how to defend, but the effort is a really good sign, and I think it’s promising for the future.

Great game against the Hawks.

Looks way better than Reddish, but you did see flashes of why they drafted him. Hunter looks good. Needs to extend his range.

Porter just looks way more like star profile player than Hunter or Reddish.

Hunter and Reddish weren't drafted to be stars though. Despite their high draft position Hunter was a surefile role player and Reddish was a swing for the fences but when he went to Hawks his role was going to be similar to Hunter just more raw. Defensive stopper and spot up shooter.

That wasn't what I heard about Hunter. Teams thought he had more upside and being taken at 4 belies that. They traded up for a surefire roleplayers?

His profile was always a role player. He can't create his own offense. Hawks took him because they need potentially elite defenders and spot up shooters next to Trae Young. Nothing about Hunters profile screamed anything more then a premier 3 and D wing.

He has some weird jerky/stutter movements... I mean that in a good way, it can be confusing for the defenders to predict his movements... If he develop his outside shot, he would be dangerous...

If he and Exum pans out, Cavs would be set on the SG poaition with athleticism and size...

I think Hunter had a high floor but low ceiling because of the lack of handles and his age. He is a Trevor Ariza type. He is solidly your 3rd best player but probably doesn't develop the necessary skills to be a #2 and is a extreme long shot to be a #1 option. Not sure if that falls into a role player category, I think he is one of those rare players that falls into not a star but better than a role player.

I'll put it this way. I'd have been fine taking him at 5, but trading assets to move up would have made me unhappy

Hunter was worst case scenario for me draft night. He doesn't have the upside to justify using a top 5 pick on. High Floor-Mid Ceiling guys are not guys you use a top 5 pick on unless he's your missing piece to turning it around. Hawks think Trae Young is their centerpiece so they felt like adding a 3-D guy was worth a top 5 pick.

Gotta give Altman props on the trade up to draft Mr. Porter Jr., looks like a home run. He took over the game for a stretch and led the Cavs on a huge run, lead evaporated when he sat down.

How did this guy fall to 30? It's not like he was some unknown––a lot of draft experts considered him a lottery talent with an NBA body and some question marks. In a deep draft of role players, you would think some team would have taken the swing earlier.

What I have enjoyed most about watching Porter is the energy he has brought every single game. Even when his shot hasn't been falling (which clearly needs an offseason or two of work), he has contributed. The most pleasant surprise of the season thus far.

If Hunter achieves Trevor Ariza that is a home run.. I think reddish has upside, but he is more of a dice roll.
