2019 Series #35 | Indians vs Astros | July 30th, July 31st, & August 1st

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
To Whom It May Concern:

This will be my last letter. We have grown apart over these last six weeks. I now have two loves in my life: big-city livin' and a voodoo woman named Phyllis.

Ciao, Roberto.

Seems like we’ve traded for 5 good hitters in the past 8 weeks:

Mercado, Ramirez, Kipnis, Puig, and Reyes

To be fair tonight though, not sure if any of these Astros pitchers would pitch a meaningful inning in the playoffs. Still good to see the pop, to give the home crowd a show, and to make strides to winning the division

Don't wanna overreact to one good night, but the way we're hitting, where is the weak link in this lineup--

Mercado
Lindor
Ramirez
Santana
Reyes
Puig
Kipnis
Naquin
Perez

--provided that Perez and Santana are coming out of their mini-slumps and Ramirez and Kipnis stay steady?

Very excited.

I still trust Kipnis about as far as I can throw him when it comes to the upcoming September and October baseball, given his struggles the past few seasons.

.681 OPS on the season (coming into tonight's game)

He has been at a .730 OPS the past 28 days however (according to BBall reference), so if he can keep floating around .730-.750, then he won't kill us in the #8 slot when we insert Puig and Reyes.

Complete list of MLB catchers with more home runs than Roberto Perez:

Gary Sanchez
Mitch Garver
Yasmani Grandal
Wilson Contreras

Not bad company. Perez with 18 HR this season in 256 ABs. He had 21 total in his career in 818 ABs prior to this season.

What a year, and he might be able to add a Gold Glove on top of it too.

Are any catchers in the AL even close to Perez behind the plate? Genuinely asking--not rhetorical. Fangraphs has Danny Jansen and Christian Vazquez ahead of him. I haven't watched enough of either to have an opinion, but it's hard for me to fathom a better catcher behind the dish. Elite calling of games, elite arm, and fewest amount of passed balls + wild pitches in baseball.

Honestly, I'm not great at comparing catchers to one another in terms of defense.

I will say though, I think the Indians have been very lucky to have Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez manning behind the dish for us for the past however many years. I think both of those guys were top-5 game-callers, defenders, and blockers in their respective starting years.

It's very rare I see a catcher on an opposing team call a game and say "wow, he's better than Perez".
