2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
the tanking discussion is irrelevant because the team has delly and he wins games

it reminds me of 2016/17 when milwaukee fans wanted to tank and were so happy because they thought delly was the tank commander, but delly had a different idea and the bucks won 14 out of 17 games to sneak into the playoffs, then in 2017/18 simply making the playoffs wasn't enough when it would have been if they tanked

I would get him something nicer than a T-55.

They are death traps.

The Cavs have to hit their draft picks (especially lottery) on the head as the Cavs are not major FA destination. So Koby has to really concentrate and look long and hard about who he drafts. You can’t take a player because he’s “raw” and may develop into a star (ie: Okoro). When you’re drafting in the five spots you need to draft a difference maker....not a role player!

I hope everyone can stay healthy for the next month. I’d like to watch this team play some games together just to see how the pieces fit and if there is any hope we could sniff being a .500 team next year. I know there is value in losing and picking higher in the draft, but I feel like we don’t even know what we could be with what we have.

I don't know what it is but every since Lebron left this team been hit with alot of injuries.

Fedor had this after last night:

the Cavs entered the night just 3-24 on the season when behind after the first quarter. Make that 3-25 now.

Like I said a couple of weeks ago, they have to approach every game like it's a 12-minute game, not a 48-minute one. And that this game will decide whether they go to the playoffs or not. Start each game with the mindset that these next 12 minutes will decide whether they make the play-in. Because it just might. They could realistically miss the 10th spot by one game.

If they return Weds that gives us 19 games to see what this team looks like with all their key players available at the same time: Allen, Hartenstein, Nance, Love, Wade, Okoro, Prince, Sexton, Garland and Delly. That's when this season really starts. The first 53 games they either were playing with Drummond and without Love or they had Sexton and/or Garland and/or Nance out, or they had Allen and Nance out.

Nineteen games to evaluate where the Cavs are and what they need going into next season. All the players I mentioned will be back next year if they sign Allen and Delly, plus they'll have a draft pick. Actually, the first couple of games I expect Allen and Nance will be rusty and JBB will be trying to figure out what combinations work best together and how many players he wants in his rotation, so maybe it's the last 15 games that will be the most instructive.

Not necessarily. I'm actually big on taking "raw" players. Look where Giannis and Siakam and Butler and Kawhi (#15) were drafted. I put this comment in last night's game thread but I'll repeat it here.

Toronto is the smartest organization in the NBA. Check out their roster and where they were drafted...

Kyle Lowry 24th
Pascal Siakam 27th
Og Anunoby 23rd
Malachi Flynn 29th (20 points, 11 assists last night)
Fred VanVleet undrafted
Chris Boucher undrafted

This is one organization that has no interest in tanking for the draft. They do better than anybody else with late 1sts, early 2nds, and undrafted free agents.

The Cavs could learn from them.

The Cavs have not had a productive last 1st round or 2nd round pick since Joe Harris in 2014 and he was traded away early in his career.

I agree it's important to hit on your lottery picks and that the Cavs are not a "major FA destination" so they need to build through the draft (Sexton, Garland, Okoro) and trades (Love, Allen, Hartenstein, Nance). Actually you could argue they got Love in the draft since they traded the #1 pick for him. But it would really help if they could find a free agent or two like VanVleet (maybe Dean Wade in time?) or hit on a mid-to-late round pick if they ever get another one.

Looking at the Cavs draft history, the most recent blown lottery picks were Anthony Bennett in 2013 and Dion Waiters in 2012. Then you have to go back to 2004 and Luke Jackson to find another one. That's only three "bad" lottery picks in the last 18 years.

The Raptors have shown some of the best devopmental staff in the NBA. That is a fairly similar theme when it comes to the teams we have all discussed including Miami, Denver, SA, Utah, and especially Portland. Portland notably has all their players be nonexistant for a season and then break out as sophomores (except Dame).

For what its worth, I think the Cavs young players have shown incredible development. Although to some extent, that might just be the work ethic of the players Koby has targeted with guys like Sexton, Nance, and Okoro. This type of attitude is a great foundation for a culture and team. We are starting to become the kind of organization that Jimmy Butler would like.

As maddening as this season has been,,,,
As inconsistent as the play has been,,,,
We still have never seen the whole team healthy, playing on the floor, in a regular rotation.
It just sort of makes you wonder how it would have been.

It also makes it hard to evaluate things.

This team has some solid pieces in place, if we can get a little lucky in the draft we'll be in great shape. We could also add another solid Role player but as you can see there are some solid pieces in place 2-10.

Who in this draft do you want as a potential SF superstar?

#1 Superstar - Hopefully in Draft
#2's Sexton, Garland?
#3 - Garland, Allen
#4 - Love, Okoro?
Role Players - Nance, Okoro,
Bench Depth 9-13 - Wade, Cedi, Prince, Windler, Hartenstein?

Can't keep them all but Stevens has done the best job on bigger guys like Larry night he slowed Zion down guarding Kawhi etc

work ethic should be considered a talent/skill, like leaping ability. I agree with the assessment, my concern is at the top of the org chart. Would really like to see Altman become president of basketball ops and have a GM underneath. Unfortunately I think Gilbert considers himself President of BBall OPS.

Cade would go a long way, though he'd still need a year and a half to start hitting as high a level as you'd need.
I also think you could go with a star-level 4 man, as Love is eventually going to be dealt or is simply on the heavy minute restriction thing.
And I believe Okoro could blossom into a Jaylen Brown level player. Maybe better. Kid is very special, and still really young.
Could the Cavs go get a "damaged goods" reclamation and make it work? I wonder if they could do something with Marvin Bagley. He's struggled to stay on the floor, so you might just end up with another empty-roster spot like Love has been by and large.
