2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lots of talk about the Cavs needing a scoring wing, and I agree. Still, I don't think it is beyond the realm of possibility that one or two of the guys already on the roster can become that guy with another year of experience under their belt. Cedi... I hated him this year, but he has been much better before last year... might have been a "blip" year before continued growth. Stevens... where did this guy come from... mature for a rookie... strong, tough guy... good defense... good mid range shooter... needs to shoot a couple thousand three pointers every day this off season. Windler... apparently was shooting lights out three pointers in training camp but it disappeared during the season... might get it back with health... better on defense, passing and rebounding than I expected. Prince... certainly has the aggressive scoring attitude... I hated him some games and loved him others... might find consistency. Who knows. It could happen.

I think we have wings that can be role players but we need guys with higher ceilings to really compete. I would take a swing at a wing with some upside with the MLE instead of going after a backup PG. Wing depth is a big part of the modern NBA and it's a place where we are really lacking talent.

Backup PG should be a cheap position to fill and easily to fill from a late 1st round to 2nd round pick. Delly, McConnel, and Caruso were all undrafted. Use some of our future 2nd round picks to trade for a pick in this year's draft and save 8 or 9 million dollars. It will also get someone on the same timeline as our core. McConnel is 29 and Caruso is 27, they don't lineup with our core's age and would be short term fixes.

Yes and lets make sure said point guard is 6'4 or 6'5 ,,,this player could run with either Sexton or Garland and cover the opposing teams
2 guard. That would really be awesome. No more 6'1 guards.

what would it take to get a late first though? I think maybe they could get a early second from OKC at 35th & 36th and who has two or three firsts and three seconds overall in this draft, but only one second in 2022 or something. If cavs are willing to move the SA or Washington 2022 2nd in a swap , but I would not offer the Houston pick which is gold as bad as they will be next season.

If he is healthy (big if), I would take a flyer on Exum for vet min, Cavs defense was good on the few games he played before getting injured again...
thats the problem he has never been able to stay available as good as he is

From the mock drafts I've looked at, alot of the PGs in this draft are actually on the taller side. Alot of PGs listed at 6'5 and upperclassmen so hopefully NBA ready. We don't need to find someone with a very high ceiling if we are just looking for a backup PG.

Brooklyn might not want the guaranteed money of a 1st round pick or newly drafted players taking up rosters from would be ring chasers. They have 3 picks in this draft. Houston, the Knicks, New Orleans, Detroit, and OKC have 4 picks in this draft.

I'm not even sure we need to get into the late first round to get a good 6'5 PG. There are seven 6'5+ PGs that are mock drafted from nbadraft.net in the second round.

I was reading an article yesterday that this draft is loaded in the top 5- the author was willing to say it can be historically good. Is it possible for the stars to align and the Cavs to get its new star to go with the young core?
This can be pretty damn exciting if it’s true.

I could see them looking at the undrafted market post draft like they did with others last season. Reaves could be there.
Imo guards like Duece McBride, although not 6'5, would make a really good back up, as well as Tre Mann if he slides to the late first range.
I agree the crop of over 6'3 guards like Dosunmu & Duarte or a playmaking guard forward like Caleb Love could be had high second, and probably some lesser polarizing options like Duke &Garrett have good size as well later. I wonder if they could target a combo like Quinton Grimes late first as well. In fact looking at that roster maybe Grimes Houston teammate Jarreau, who is a huge defensive guard, could make some sense late 2nd or UDFA.

We really lack shooting from the right side of the 3pt line especially in the corner. Prince is the only one that is a very good shooter from that spot. Wade is basically the only very good shooter from the right side arch.

It also really shows that for certain guys we aren't generating shots in spots they are good shooters at. Wade and Cedi take alot of shots where they are below average shooters.

Good stuff. A couple quick thoughts: 1. Taurean Prince should stick to 3-pointers, 2. Darius Garland should mothball the floaters and runners in the lane, 3. Kevin Love wasn't as bad as I thought (about league average everywhere), and 4. We desperately need outside shooting.

That’s a two fold problem.
One: a good coach makes sure the offense and the play calling is geared to put those shooters in their zone areas. Two: a good PG ( playmaker) makes sure he sets the offense on the floor and delivers the right pass to the right person in the right spot on the floor. That’s what a good floor general does.
