2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So we're trading McGee to a team that already has three superstars but desperately needs a big man to eat some minutes. And we're going to help them fill that need so they can make a championship run.

Exactly how good would you expect that second round pick to be?

The Nets are a terrible trading partner because they shot their wad to acquire Harden. Nets honks and bad journalists are going to push that trade because they see that the Nets have a major need, and they'll just assume the Cavs will cooperate.

If they hypothetically are the only team offering a second, you take the deal. Cavs aren’t a Javale away from winning the title this year.

If one of Drummond or Allen gets hurt later in the season and the Cavs are looking down the bench at Thon Maker because they traded McGee for the 58th pick in the 2024 draft, I wouldn't say they maximized their asset.

Especially since Thon Maker isn't on the team.

JaVale provides more by being a great locker room presence, mentor and a great replacement in case of an injury than a late 2nd round pick. Also, why would you want to help this Brooklyn team just to get a late 2nd? seriously...

JaVale could also be re-signed in the off-season to a favorable deal. I don't really buy this hypothetical, but even if it were the only option, i'd 100% rather keep him than trade him for a late 1st to the Brooklyn Nets especially.

I guess we will see what Altman does. I’ve learned to trust him. If a Nets deal is the one he takes, let’s trust it’s the best deal.

The more it hamstrings future flexibility, the more assets you require in return. Im a little less worried about keeping cap space because the Cavaliers aren't a destination for FAs. They have to use cap space to get assets in trade to take on bad contracts; which trading Drummond would do.
It’s not Drummond the player, it’s Drummond the contract that’s less desired than McGee.
Figuring out how to match a $27 million contract without hamstringing future salary flexibility is the bigger challenge.

McGee is literally the perfect guy to come off the bench and play 15-20 minutes per game behind Allen long-term. I'll be pissed if we trade him and keep Drummond.

McGee is 33.

True, but it's pretty normal for a playoff team to have an 8th/9th man veteran in his mid 30's. As long as he stays healthy he should be fine for that role, imo.

Looks plenty athletic still..

Can sign him to a two year deal.

If the relationship is good, we can sign him in the offseason even after trading him.

What I’m actually interested in doing is exploring attaching a future protected first round pick WITH Javale and seeing what we could get back, targeting a player who was drafted between 2017-2020 who is still under their rookie deal. Someone in theory like a Jarret Culver, RJ Hampton, etc

Great article here about Tristan and how he has been a mentor to Garland and Nance. He may have earned every dollar of his last contract based on leadership alone.
