2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Gray is a 4x pro bowler as a player and has been both DB coach and DC(BUF/TEN) in his career.

Has been in MIN since 2014 so plenty of familiarity with both Edwards and Stefanski

Glad it's happening for the Vikings, sometimes voices go stale when they've been there too long with the same players, but someone is going to get real lucky if they pair up Edwards and Gray again.

Sure, Edwards didn't call plays, but he was heavily involved in game planning for the defense, which has been a major strength of the Vikings the entire tenure he spent there.

And Gray's track record of developing DBs speaks for itself, between the Legion of Boom in its infancy and the group the Vikings were putting out there from 2014 to 2018.

Have to think Andre Patterson follows with those guys, no?

His work in Minnesota is ELITE, they've done an incredible job of developing that talent on the DL.

Calls out AC Patterson and Christian Jones, the Vikings Quality Control staffers, wouldn't be surprised to see them come over with Stefanski.

Said he spends the most time with those guys over anyone else.

Rumor is he is the front-runner for DC in Minnesota.
Makes sense. In choosing Patterson, they are passing up Gray, who has loyalties to Edwards. They might have felt like it could be an issue to have a passed over Gray on the staff without Edwards there and with another internal candidate being given the DC position.

I’m sure he’s a good coach but zimmer worked a lot on the dline too. More than anywhere else. So it’s hard to tell who’s the reason for their success.

That's kind of why you'd want to promote him, no?

If Zimmer is going to still call plays, then at DC you just need someone he trusts, works well with, and can take some other responsibilities off his plate. I'm guessing Patterson would still effectively be the DL coach, just with an added title and more responsibility.

Without doing that, they risk losing him to another team for a DC position.

The other thing to keep in mind is Zimmer is 63. He might only have a couple years left. This could also end up being some type of head-coach-in-waiting situation if they like Patterson that much.

Question I have about Wilks is whether he was someone Stefanski said he wanted or if Dorsey told him and Kitchens that's who was going to be DC and both said "Okay."

Would mean Andre Patterson didn't get the promotion. Wonder if he would be available to be poached after all.

This question applies to both Patterson and Gray. You've coached in the NFL for decades. You risen high up in the coaching ranks. You've been part of a succesfull defense in MIN since 2014. Paid your dues. Your current DC leaves and the job goes to the 36 year old son of the head coach. Yes, he's led a good LB unit, but look at you resume and blood sweat and tears that dates back to before he was in HS even.

You comfortable sticking around? Or do you want a fresh start, even if its a lateral move, at a new place with coaches you're familiar with.

Patterson btw also coached DL here for two seasons under Butch, including one year(2004) with George Edwards
