2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If I’m Jerry Gray and Andre Patterson, I’m not sure I’m to keen on sticking around after being passed up for the job by the coaches 36 year old son, even if his work as LB Coach is supposedly good.

Would welcome them both here under Edwards or Phillips

Nepotism is alive and well in the NFL.

If the browns can actually find stability in the staff as a result of someone else’s nepotism, I’m all for it.

I'm cool with any of the DC candidates.

(Yes, even Wilks. They were 15th in DVOA Team Defense until Myles went and lost his mind)

Wilks is not my first choice and I get that injuries happen to every team, but when you combine all the lost games we had to our defensive starters + the offenses turnovers and poor play, I don’t feel like he is/was as bad as many believe

Wade Phillips will give us 2 solid years atleast.

• One of Kevin Stefanski’s most important moves over the coming weeks will be finding a defensive coordinator, and there are names young and old to consider. Among those on his list were Colts DBs coach Jonathan Gannon, Bills DBs coach John Butler, 49ers DBs coach/passing game coordinator Joe Woods and Eagles special assistant Matt Burke. It’s also worth wondering if Stefanski will consider Vikings DC George Edwards, now that he’s available.

• Edwards’s departure from the Vikings was interesting, but my understanding is that it was simply time to move on with his contract expiring. The 52-year-old Edwards had hoped for some head-coaching sniffs when the Minnesota defense was really rolling the last few years. One reason that wasn’t happening—head coach Mike Zimmer calls the defense there.

Pretty sure this is Wade low key campaigning for the job. He knows the narrative that Browns are analytic heavy and this timely tweet highlights the fact that his “football guy” defense is highly regarded by PFF metrics

Wade is nothing short of a brilliant man, but the Browns would need to prioritize diverse skill sets at linebacker immediately, and that is along with the other needs elsewhere. For me personally, I'd prefer them continue to target Leslie Frazier because he has worked with familiar concepts to Wilks. He is also known as having disciplined defenses, so I'd guess he would put an end to the general "loose but aggressive" approach we saw in 2019.

Honestly, why not just keep Wilks? I really did not think he was that bad. The scheme was not the problem - we had a defense inexperienced with zone, very little depth, and tons of injuries.

Issue with Wilks is that he seems to insist on running "his scheme" even if the personnel doesn't suit it.

It seems like the Browns may have their pick of some pretty great DCs. Yeah, I know they *can* mess this up, but theyd have to try pretty hard to shit the bed on this with *this* many good options, right?

Wade, Frazier, Edwards, Wilks, etc. Stefanski could definitely do much worse.

Not sure I said that but maybe I did. Honestly know very little about Wade except I liked his father.
Ahh, that's what I wrongly inferred you meant.

I am not a huge fan of Wilks. Nonetheless, there were elements of his defense that worked this year, and I fundamentally believe the young guys would enter the season better prepared to play his style.

I'd love to get Frazier, but isn't he still under contract as Buffalo's DC? We couldn't offer him a promotion. He'd be taking the same job. Unless he demanded it or Buffalo just decided to let him walk for some reason I don't believe he can be an option.

Phillips would be great. One way to diversify skill at LB very quickly would be Isiah Simmons. Certainly need help at LT, but he'd be difficult to pass on if he's on the board at 10.

The concern with Stefanski is that he has never been a head coach at any level, and there are decisions to be made in the big chair that he has never made. He needs to add a veteran NFL coach at DC or OC so that he can bridge into his role. Stefanski has a great makeup to be an excellent head coach, but you don't get a shortcut to experience. A guy like Frazier or Phillips who can mentor would be great, if not he might be looking for that mentorship from the OC or a special assistant who has been a head coach.
