2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does anyone know what type of defense Bickerstaff likes to run. I can't find an article on it online....

On,the wine and gold podcast,Chris Fedor mention that the Cavs are interviewing LaMelo,Deni and Okoro today..

Edit:I went back and he said that's their preference in that order. Due to the pandemic they're doing interviews virtually but have to submit their preference to the league.

One of the reason, why Sexton was drafted because he did a great job in the interview phase and it been a huge influence on who they draft...

I'm happy with that being their top 3 assuming they think there is no point interviewing Wiseman

Somebody sell me on Okoro. I haven't seen him play, so ignore this if that's an issue, but from his numbers I see a guy who measures on the small side for a 3 and doesn't shoot well. His free throw shooting is subpar which suggests he'll have a heavy lift improving his overall shooting to even league average for a wing. Why is he in the picture top 5?

He’s 6’6 but he has a thick build, really strong kid. He’s a very versatile player who makes an impact on both ends of the floor, right now his defense is ahead of his offense. High IQ player, doesn’t do anything to hurt his team, offensive game needs to develop but he shows signs that make me believe he’s got a lot of potential to grow into a great player. He‘s a pretty decent ball handler, looks like he can get better, has good vision and a good feel for the game. Can get to the rim and finish at a high level or dump it off to a teammate for a better shot. The only weakness is the shooting but his form isn’t broken, seems like he just needs time to work on it.

Player comps I’ve seen are Iggy, Jimmy Butler, Justise Winslow... Somebody here compared him to Marcus Smart and I thought that was a very good comp. I could see Okoro filling a similar role and being a heart and soul kind of guy for a team. I think he has the potential to be a more productive player than Smart, but he is a versatile do everything guy like that, without the weird anger issues lol

Well, LaMelo is sure to be gone by 5. so I guess that means Avdija??? Hmmm...

I guess that also means they are committed to developing Garland as their long term PG.

I'm not really liking the preferences. Avdija doesn't grade out very well on defense or shooting, which is what I would look for in a SF. And ya'll know what I think of Garland LT.

It could be worse, they could be targeting Toppin.

The more I read and the more I think about this... I'm betting Okoro is going to be the pick.

Already hyping the guy for his defensive capabilities, effort, grit, gym rat etc.... Reminds me of the Sexton pick (minus the defensive part).

At this point I think it's going to be Okoro but obviously Adjiva is in the conversation too if he slips to 4. If Fedor is to be believed it certainly appears the team is looking for a SF type that has some ballhandling ability. Okoro's court vision is actually quite good if you watch his highlights. He's obviously a very strong finisher at the basket but he's made some really nice passes too. I could see him develop as a secondary ballhandler in addition to the defense he will instantly bring. His body is definitely stout enough to hold up the grind of an NBA season similar to Sexton (Too bad it seems Windler's body might not be capable of holding up for an entire NBA season). In some ways Okoro reminds me a bit of Jaylen Brown except that Okoro's handles are way better....maybe a notch below Justice Winslow's handle coming out of school but Winslow unfortunately has not been able to stay healthy. If he has a work ethic anything close to Sexton than I'd be happy to have Okoro on the team. His jumper doesn't go in now but I don't see any huge technical flaws... it's more that he's just tentative to take many outside shots.

Yeah Okoro probably needs to just shoot more and get comfy on the perimeter. He does have vision, and a good basketball IQ. He's my pick. I also want Haliburton for similar reasons, but I know getting a guard isn't likely. He's a perfect fit culturally. I like Vassell too and wouldn't be dissapointed. Even more NBA ready defensively, but I think his upside is more limited. I think Okoro has the chance of being a star that gets on the floor for defense, but ends up being a very good offensive player.

As for Windler, I think it is unfair to say "will his body hold up". Everyone said Beilein ran the guys too hard, to the extent by the time they played summer league games they were at a competitive disadvantage because they were gassed. Windler has literally never been injured before, so when he had pain he just kept going until he damaged his leg so much it couldn't heal. I think the bigger worry with him is that he might try to play on an injury he shouldn't. He never missed a game in 4 years of College.

Yep apparently the team really likes what Windler brings to the table. From what I saw he looked super skinny by NBA standards and then he of course got injured. Offensively I think he's a great fit with his shooting and ball skills. Defensively I think he might have a bit of a problem defending the better NBA wings. I haven't really watched any NBA since March since our Cavs haven't been playing..really looking forward to watching this team moving forward though.

Regardless I believe they will need to add at least one more player to replace the toughness and ballhandling that Delly provided. The guy was obviously washed but obviously having him on the court still provided a much needed spark.

Everything you said is correct but will the front office see it that way. If,the owner is pressing Altman to improve the team this makes all the sense in the world to draft Okoro or atleast someone that defensive minded.

I think this team can improve Okoro's shot..

It makes no sense to draft Okoro if ownership is pressing Altman to improve the team if Okoro has such a huge deficiency in his game with his shot. We'd probably be looking at a safer pick like Toppin or Wiseman.

And,be at the bottom in defense again...

No single player in this draft is going to improve our overall defensive profile alone. If our defense improves it will mainly be because of the defensive improvements of the current players on the roster. It won't be because we drafted a defensive minded player. This is like arguing for drafting MKG in 2012 because our defense sucked.
