2020 Series #18 White Sox @ Indians, Sep 21-24

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A few thoughts...

The playoff rotation looks set.

Biebs, Plesac, Cookie (if needed) in the first and second rounds. Civale and TMac, if needed, as 4-5 in the second.

For tonights game, the team had two options to start.

Plutko and Quantrill.

Quantrill got the call. What does that say about Plutko, who on paper could give the most innings? Obviously, its gonna be some type of bullpen game...and we may see both tonight.

But does this signal that Quantrill is now the #6 going into the playoffs? Or is it an audition to be the first replacement?

But wouldnt you want Plutko to get an extended outing now, just in case one of the top five pulled up lame?
It would seem like they gave Q a nod to start, perhaps projecting into next season, but Plutko would seem pretty likely to be in after a few innings, hopefully carrying us another 3+ innings tonight. Hard to imagine Quantrill would be an emergency playoff starter, as he is not at all stretched out...probably back to the pen where he will potentially see inning+ work as needed. If we really need a replacement 5th (and that will mean we've won some games -- nice), it will likely be a short leash Plutko/bullpen game...all good!

Quantrill starting gives him a HUGE opportunity to showcase his talent and that he belongs in the starting rotation.. Up until now..he's been used strictly out of the tribe bullpen and only a few times with the Padres has he gone more than an inning and only one start. Up until 2020, he was developed strictly as a starter as he zoomed through the Padres minor league system. What a great chance for him !

Simply stated..from what we've seen.. he has the stuff to be a very good middle of the rotation starter.. perhaps more..

We'll see..
I would certainly hope they give him an opportunity for the rotation next season...have to imagine that was always part of the plan. Worse case scenario, he can always go back to being a good pen arm.

Plutko is hardly stretched out. He's pitched twice in September for a total of thirty pitches.

His last major outing was August 28th, which means he could go five or six weeks without much work before an emergency post season start. If he was cemented as the sixth starter, wouldn't it be better to get him 70+ pitches tonight and again Sunday?

It looks like Quantrill, Bieber, Plesac, TMac, Cookie, Civale, Quantrill/Plutko to end it. Why not go with Plutko tonight, which would make more sense, if he is gonna be the emergency starter?

If Quantrill only goes 2 innings (Likely?) , Why would we not expect Plutko to have the opportunity to go 3-4 innings?...not sure the "starter" has much bearing here, as they know what they have in Plutko. We'll see how it goes....

I think the score of the game plays a lot into Plutko's usage. In a blow out, they might just throw him to the dogs and milk him for as many innings as they can stomach.

Thats probably true, but the question remains...why not just have Plutko start?

I could see using Quantrill as an opener if he was a lefty, in order to influence Chicago's starting lineup to benefit Plutko later.

And, if Quantrill is only scheduled for two innings, its hardly an audition for a starting role down the road.

The only thing that makes sense to me is....in preparation for the post season...the FO wants to see how Quantrill looks with a full starters preparation before pitching, as opposed to a quick warm-up in a relievers role.

It isn't like Quantrill hasn't thrown more than 15 pitches per outing. He's gone at least 30 pitches three times for us and is probably close to as stretched out as Plutko. His max this year is 77. He could go 50+ tonight and 70 on Sunday.

Yeah, I certainly do not know "why". My guess is that the wanted to see Quantrill in the role (with that prep), already knowing Plutko, and assuming he'll get innings anyway?!?

Quantrill against Reynaldo Lopez and his 5.40 ERA. We could see quite a few runs scored tonight. Lopez has had some problems and the White Sox can hit.

Plutko will be 29 in a couple of weeks and has a career record of 12-12 with a 5.10 ERA. He's a free agent at the end of this season and I can't see any way he'll be back next year or pitching in the playoffs this year other than to close out a game if we're down by 10 runs. No disrespect intended but he is what he is.

I thank him for eating innings for us the past few years.

I will enjoy watching him nab an NL Cy Young later in his career a la R.A. Dickey.

Plutko isn't a free agent...He isnt even in arbitration yet...

Nicely done.. 5-4-3 DP to end the first inning.. Quantrill appears to be ready/not overwhelmed by the start.. For my money.. bringing young guys (like quantrill, espino, hankins, others) to the ML's while giving them 'regular' or 'semi-regular' work out of the pen.. is the best way to bring guys into the brightest lights of Major League Baseball.. We'll see if Quantrill can get 3 or 5 innings tonight..

Why start start Bieber tonight? Not sure what the shuffling accomplishes.

Prob trying to give Quantrill some burn to see if he can be useful.

Six pitches in an inning is a good start.

Hernandez homer is a good start, too.
