Can we sign a player to a non-guaranteed contract with the MLE? At the very least it would be a useful trade-piece.

If we are going to face facts, it looks like we will not be able to sign a SG or wing in free agency that is worth a hill of beans.
If we are going to add one of these guys that can help the roster a lot, it has to be by a trade.

Exactly. Prince's contract was our lone decent size expiring and maybe we could have figured out a trade with it to get a wing.

We should have tried to see where we could have shored up our depth in the 2nd round of the draft. Then saw what positions we could have attracted any free agents. Then used Prince's contract and some assets to find a trade to patch any holes we still had.

If we did the Rubio trade now, I wouldn't have any problem with it because we would have exhausted other options. Just doing it before the draft limited us in so many ways.

Right now I'd rather have expiring to trade for a wing and be looking to pay someone that is left from the PG group with the MLE.

that would be a hard move to pull off. Not sure any decent MLE player would want to sign a non guaranteed contract with a lottery team.

Well, how about an Indecent player?

If we have thoughts of facilitating another Jarrett Allen-type trade, we're going to need fungible contracts on hand.

Didn’t the nba close that loop hole with non guaranteed contracts being traded? I thought they did and you can only use the guaranteed portion of the contract to match up in a trade.

It would be easier to just sign someone to a 1+1 deal with a team option. Gets a player that is possible worth the contract and we might be able to get value from that player if they are playing well but we can get an upgrade. Worse case scenario they become an expiring with no value from the player but it gives us an expiring which we really don't have right now.

If we didn't have Rubio, I would say Schroder would be someone to target but we dont have playing time for him.

I don't think there's any instant depth from the 2nd round for meaningful minutes in year 1. Long term, but it has to be worth the spend. I'd guess the Cavs had opportunities to acquire a player but didn't like the price.

The Rubio trade limited the amount of money they could include to buy a pick.

Not getting more players in this last two drafts might hurt this team long term. There is no point on sitting on so many future second round picks. We had minutes last season to develop players and the front office didn't learn from that this year. We aren't positioned any better his year to give minutes to develop players beyond our core when players get injured.

Free agency has basically shown not to be a good avenue for us to get better. We need to utilize the draft more to build up the over all talent of the team. Retreads have gotten us nowhere.

Rubio trade was 2.5 M in cash traded. The limit is 5 Million. Team had 2.5 M to use on buying a pick if they wanted to. The Sixers bought the 52nd pick albeit before the draft for 2 Million. The Rubio deal didn't squash any deals. The team clearly didn't value any of the players in the 2nd enough to trade for one. It's really not a big deal.

I don't get the urgency to sign some marginal wing or another backup point guard. We're going with a 9- or 10-man rotation which will consist of Garland, Sexton, Rubio, Okoro, Windler/Cedi, Nance, Love, Mobley, and Allen. If Hartenstein returns he'll also be in. Dotson, Wade, and Stevens will be competing for time if somebody is hurt; same with Kabengele if they keep him.

Those are the minutes you'd like to upgrade from. Windler has yet to be available, Cedi is too available and true Love is always unattainable.

The timing of the Rubio trade meant the money spent was from *last* years pot. Unless they spent it elsewhere, the Cavaliers have their full allotment of cash to spend this year.

Are you sure about that? While the trade was agreed upon in principle and reported before the draft, I don't think it became official until a few days ago.

New league year didn't start until today. Since it was announced Tuesday it was considered as a transaction from last season.
