2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Several teams are emptying their 40 man rosters significantly and quickly....including two to keep an eye on...Oakland and Baltimore.

Baltimore has dropped four already.

Kole Calhoun got his option declined, he would be a target for me on a minor league contract with incentives...I think we will target guys like him to finalize the spring roster.

Can only really take so many players though. I think the 40 man cleanings could also be to make way to protect their own prospects, or prepare to take on prospects from a trade of vets. I think Oakland is prepping for a fire sale imo.

I would have liked to have had Calhoun before. When healthy, he is a quality player in the field and at bat.

But this season he had surgery on a knee AND a hammy, and then spent another month on the IL with a strain to the same hammy. With him I see visions of Chisenhall and Naquin sitting on the IL continuously.

But he is on my list of short term FA signings, just not near the top.

Along with my top target, Canha, there is also McCutchen. He is old, but still interesting. In his three years with Philly, interrupted by a torn ACL, he has had nearly 110 PAs, the rough equivalent of two full seasons....47 HR, 94 XBHs, a .343 OBP, and a 109 OPS+.

He's limited to LF and his defense has declined, but still might be a good, low cost pickup...IF he is low cost.

Don't think they look to add a LHH OFer on a MLB deal, so I'd focus in on RHH guys.

On a Minor league deal would it matter the batting side? I feel like we need to bring in the veteran talent especially if they have been considered good role models/good clubhouse guys...

I think if they bring in a lefty it is someone coming just to get some reps and maybe showcase them for another team as a favor. Look at who should potentially be on or added to the 40 man that will be in camp with them this Spring getting reps in the OF.

Jones, Palacios, Valera are all lefties. Think its a given one of Zimmer or Johnson sticks, so there's another lefty. And just to satisfy the portion of this board that thinks Kwan is 40 manned, there is another lefty.

They don't have a decent platoon bat in the OF right now, like they have had in off seasons prior.

I'm pinpointing in on RHHs that can play everyday, but also have favorable splits vs LHP (in case one of those lefties breaks out or Naylor comes back).

Its why Straw being RH is so huge.. As for the part above in bold, I'm figuring Johnson since he still has an option available.

I'm curious @BimboColesHair, since Amed Rosario & Gabriel Arias are both RH hitters, might the CLE FO consider moving 1 of them to the OF???

I personally feel like Amed to an OF position shouldn't be ruled out, but someone has to step up into SS...

McCutchen is an interesting option, not ideal not great, but maybe he provides some intangible value ala Napoli. Also strikes me as someone who could have a "rebound" year.

Not sold on it yet, but there would be worse upgrades.

Regarding part I put in bold: I don't see a problem
Moving 1 of Amed or Arias still leaves the other with Gimenez for SS. Palacios & Owen Miller can battle it out at 2B. Clement is still around as utility.
IF Yu Chang is still around (out of options) he would also be in the equation at both places.

Realistically Rocchio & Tyler Freeman are less than a season away..
