2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Padres struck gold in hiring Melvin, and nobody had a whiff of it until after the fact. Kudos to Prellar.

Now, the question is what do the A's do. Melvin had a year left with Oakland, but was allowed to leave.

Everything now points to a major rebuild in Oakland...a multi year rebuild. You dont allow a highly successful manager to walk away when you are going for a last hurrah before your main players either walk or are too expensive to keep.

Melvin being gone takes away one (of several) voice advocating keeping any one of the A's "main players".. IOW.. let the fire sale commence... preferably, before November 15th.. Maneae, Olson, Chapman etc etc.. all on the block.. The Mets, Red Sox, Yankees , Phillies, Nats, Marlins and others are poised with their luxury tax penalties set at zero and/or dump truck loads of money to spend.. The cloud of the CBA will be the only thing hindering the feeding frenzy...

The cost to purchase A's players won't be in money up front. It will be in prospects.

But anybody willing to take on the contract of either Andrus or Piscotty will be able to buy a player.

Both contracts are in the $7.5 mil range.

Oakland let Melvin walk, because they didn't want to pay him $4 mil.

They're slimming down for Vegas?
Gonna be a few years until the stadium is ready, no? And probably a fight until they can actually move. Makes sense to cut salary and clear the books. Hmmm, I can think of another team recently that slashed payroll, sent off several of their best players, even let a respected coach just walk away too...

Seattle Mariners have announced they're not going to pick up Kyle Seager's option for 2022 making him a free agent after they pay his $ 2 MM buy out.. Speculation in Seattle is being bandied about regarding what their next steps will be.. Most of the comments seem to point to a focus on acquiring a short term answer at the hot corner until such time Noelvi Marte is ready to take over the hot corner..

Seems to make sense..

Looks like the 1st off-season trade has been completed. Our rivals the Tiger have acquired catcher Tucker Barnhart.

For basically nothing.

They really didn't have to give up anyone for Barnhart... I would have thought he was worth more than that ya know?
Barnhart has a $ 7.5 MM price tag (or DFA with a 0.5MM buy out). The Tigers need a defensive catcher for their young and talented pitching staff.. Barnhart cost nothing in the way of prospects.. even less when you consider this little 3B coming back will not require rostering.. because.. he's too young.. and follows that up with not being able to hit.. SALARY DUMP by the Reds.. Veteran acquisition by the Tigers..

FWIW - The Barnhart return was a 2019 2nd round pick who fell on his face as pro... So far..

This is the prototypical lotto ticket, no where to go but up.

Board proponents of a Bart trade to the Guardians can stop hyperventilating with the Posey retirement.

There will be no replacing Posey, but the Giants do have an heir apparent in top catching prospect Joey Bart, who is close to big league ready after spending the bulk of the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Sacramento. Veteran Curt Casali, who served as Posey’s backup this year, is also under team control for one more season.
