2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who's Mini Miggy?

I am thinking Avisail Garcia? He was solid for the Brewers in 21 and has played a decent OF... he'd be an upgrade over HRam and whatnot so he would be a target if budget is right...

Edit: so I was right lol

Avisail Garcia

Not realistic at the moment, think he is looking for a longer term deal than Cleveland would want to do, but have always liked him.
Agreed. I go back to what you said regarding the corner OF pursuits this offseason likely being through a free agent on a short term deal along with the trade for an early-arb corner OF. At the moment, my preferences would be Andrew McCutchen for the former and Austin Meadows for the latter (at the right price for both, of course.)

Will put my 2 cents here, also in the offseason thread, with regards to targets.

With last night/todays news, time to watch Ian Happ's market a bit. Some smoke out there that he might get non-tendered.

WTF?

Instead of picking up Wade Miley's option for a very reasonable $10 mil, and then trade him for prospects, the Reds put him on waivers...and the Cubs snatched him.

********

Ian Happ as FA would be interesting.

I dont understand a focus on bringing in a RH outfielder as a possible platoon partner for the lefties we have, esp if Naylor will not be ready.

A platoon bat has to hit opposite handed pitching well, or what value does he have? Among the OFs we have that have any MLB experience, the only one that hits opposite handed pitching is Mercado.

However, I think an acquisition that doesn't need platooned would make the most sense, and that might be Canha.

You clearly haven't been in touch with Milley's injury stuff and the Reds payroll situation.

Guardians 40:1 odds in 2022 and Chisox 12:1 odds.

I think you'd be rolling the dice on signing a 33 yr old Canha. Put me on the not interested list. I don't see the desire to even consider him honestly.

I think Happ is interesting regardless if he's a FA or not. I think he'd be relatively inexpensive in a trade, but signing him as a FA would be even better.

The next 3 months are going to be very interesting...........I hope.

Obviously it depends on the cost, but you are rolling the dice on any FA or trade acquisition. Canha as a relatively low cost, short term deal makes sense to me....and it leaves all our prospect capital in place to make a much bigger long term acquisition.

Geesh. A RH bat that can play both corners and 1B...high OBP with a little pop...no discernable splits...career 116 wRC+ (115 this year), decent base runner. A player that can cover any of three holes in our lineup.

If I was gonna write a job description for what the Guardians are looking for, I'd just use Canhas stat lines.

Do I see him as the major acquisition this winter? No.

But as the second piece, absolutely.

If Happ can be had for minimal cost in prospects and money, he would work just as well, maybe better....maybe not.

I think he's due for a large regression is what I was getting at. Decent player for sure, but if I'm gonna take on some risk I would prefer it be a younger player.

Avi Garcia declined his $12M option to become a FA. I'd keep an eye on his market. If he slips to a $10M/yr range then I would pursue him. He'd look nice in RF for us. He probably gets much more, but stranger things have happened.

Canha has a lot of the qualities the Guardians are going to need to contend save for one.. low salary.. He'll be on a short explen$ive contract.. Look at 2 years, 3 or more.. and 8 figures AAV.. He's a good player.. not a great player.. not a lot of new things can be said for a guy on the wrong side of 30.. With Canha, it's more that just a little.. Incremental improvement to the current tribe corner outfield spots to a little more than just better isn't worth 12 % to 20 % (1 in 8 to 1 in 5 dollars spent for the entire 40 man roster)of the total salary for the entire club.

Better means undeniably better.. .245/.345/.430 is better, but, just a wee bit below undeniably better.. @CDav is spot on.. risking a salary for an "old guy" may not be in the Guards' best interest.. We'll see..

Don't look at Canhas slash line, except for the OBP. Look at his production vs league average. He was 15% above average offensively and has position flexibility.

Thats a lot more than incrementally better than what we have had.

Now, who knows what he will get in free agency, but the market for 33 yr old corner OFs is hardly robust. Look around MLB and see how many teams will be in the market for him. Not any of the rebuilders...and probably not the mega bucks teams. And there are several much better and usually much younger OFs that are gonna fill up the market and drive the price down, like Eddie, Castellanos, Soler, Schwarber, Marte, Bryant, Garcia, Conforto, Pederson, and Pollock. Once everybody signs those guys, how many teams will be left? I think its doubtful that he's gonna get a three year contract...maybe two with an option that nobody plans to ever pick up.

We do not have the wherewithal to add two 4 WAR OFs. The idea that we can afford to shop in the Mercedes lot is loony tunes.

The free agent options to Canha are guys like McCutchen (35), Pham (33), and Calhoun (34). We need a productive short term bridge to Valera, and Canha may fit the bill.

Canha is more of an oval peg for the circle hole. Checks some boxes, raises some potential flags. Contract length is the bogeyman here but he also won't be "cheap" but shouldn't break the bank.

A better fit would be someone who can backup Reyes/Jram, more than feed them. Avisail would be a better get in this regard but he is still not the perfect match.

I wouldn’t cap it at either or.

Straw is entrenched as the leadoff guy, he changed the complexion of the offense when they were able to add a plus OBP guy with plus base running to the top of the order. They were a top 10 run scoring offense just with the addition of him, on top of Franmil coming back healthy.

But that 2 spot I don’t think is Amed’s just yet. If they are able to land a solid all around hitter they’re going to put him in a position to get as many ABs as possible. A solid all around hitter is a better hitter than Amed too.

Think they look for someone to plug after Straw but ahead of Jose and Franmil, and someone they can put behind them to protect them a bit.
