Cleveland Top Prospects 2021, Tier 7.2
Continued...after sorting through the second half of the top 100 prospects in the system, I figured these 2 als belong in this 35+ sub group, but from Tolentino to Gonzalez, they have one foot in...www.coveringthecorner.com
58. LHP Kirk McCarty
Here's what I wrote a year ago: McCarty is listed at 5'8 and was a 23yo in A+ with a 5.66 ERA. FIP (2.55) and xFIP (3.16) tell an entirely different story though. He was injured and only pitched 55.2IP, so they send him to the AFL where he was pretty good and got some attention. He also was a state champion HS QB under Brett Favre, the sort of experience/mentality CLEFO values a lot.
McCarty is 25 now and still hasn't pitched at the upper levels (though AFL qualifies). He's buried by the SP depth, so his best shot might be as a reliever, especially considering his size. His FB sits in the 88-92 range but plays up due to rising action. If a move to the pen unlocks a couple more mph, paired with a ready plus curve with above avg command? That's something quite good from the left side and can easily match Nelson's stuff. McCarty was actually the first pitcher selected in the 2017 draft in round 7 and he got a decent 250K bonus, which was as much as the next two arms combined got, Eli Morgan and Karinchak. K. Nelson was the forth college pitcher taken, 3 are on the 40 roster now and McCarty still has prospect pulse. Impressive. They just know college pitching.

A lot of fun groupings scattered throughout the minors.
All the 2020 draft pitchers in Lake County. Freeman and Fermin together again in Akron, with Bo Naylor there as well. Arias and Jones manning the left side of Columbus' infield.
But damn, Lynchburg is the team to follow early this year.
Espino, Torres, Wolf in the rotation with Yainer Diaz catching.
Gabby Rodriguez, Angel Martinez, Yordys Valdez, and Bartlett/Noel in the IF.
Escobedo, Planez, and Rodriguez in the OF.
Bunch of other interesting arms too, between Trey Benton, Sergio Morillo, Jerson Ramirez, Xzavion Curry, Jordan Jones, and Randy Labaut.
That group has a chance to be a buzzsaw at that level. Lot of talent there at every position grouping.
After tonight, that looks to be an understatement! That group has a chance to be a buzzsaw at that level.
Sounds like Lake County is going with a 6 man rotation. With the minor league season about to get going, I am curious how the organization will address the rotation setup at each level (since there wasn't a 2020 season). I am sure no organization wants to see an increase in arm issues due to over-usage.
Will they go 6 man rotations?
Will they go smaller rotations w/ more piggybacks??
How with they address the week long 6 game series vs 1 opponent???
Answers will be revealed to everyone in the next week plus.
Nah, the scorekeeper dicked over the box score.Columbus:
Nolan Jones 0-4 4K
Notablyhitting 6th and Arias 7th behind Owen Miller.
Miller is a dude who this team is just going to love.
Lynchburg:
Gabriel Rodriguez in RF, seems his days as an IF may be over.
The dream is dead, just doesn’t seem to be much of the prospect I thought he could have been.
@BimboColesHair
Sorry it's a bit late, I ended up calling asleep earlier lol
What do you think of Lavastida? I was rewatching the Captains game (Gaddis wasn't missing any bats), but I am curious were they have Lavastida since he looks like he could be a legit C. I don't really see much wrong with his game at all, just little minor things that can be coached up with experience.
Nah, the scorekeeper dicked over the box score.
He was at 3rd, Johnathan Rodriguez was in RF. They mixed up the Rodriguez boys with them hitting back-to-back.
Classic.
That scorekeeper was hoping for a call up to Akron this year...not a great start, but he still has time.Classic.
