2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
OK, I will bite.

Since he was picked off the Rule Five in 2016...five years..Santander has been worth 1.8 fWAR.

In three years, Mercado has been worth 1.4.
In five years, Zimmer has been worth 2.6.

In five years, Luplow has been worth 2.5.

In the last five years, Naquin has been worth 1.6.

Heck, Ben Gamel has been worth 3.9 fWAR in the last five years.

In three years, one of which consisted of 3 games, due mostly to Covid, Harold has been worth .5 fWAR.

Santander is incapable of playing center, while our guys are/were able to at least stand out there.

If you want to throw in CFs capable of playing a corner...In 4 yrs, Straw has been worth 3.5.

While many cry crocodile tears over losing Santander, he has been a nothing burger, no better than what we had/have...and worse than almost all of them.

I agree, not having Santander shouldn't be keeping anyone awake at night. I think WAR and defensive metrics are unreliable for the most part so I won't use them in a debate. I personally like to use OPS and OPS+ and rely on a combination of some defensive metrics and the eye test for a defensive opinion. Let's take a look at the OF for our team this season. I'll list OPS first then OPS+.

Zimmer- .734, 101
HRam- .708, 90
Mercado- .616, 67
Johnson- .563, 50
Rosario- .685, 84
Naylor- .700, 88

Add that to:

Perez- .564, 52
Hedges- .488, 32
Amed- .717, 93
Gimenez- ,542, 48
Clement- .641, 74
Miller- .441,20
Chang- .563, 50

Our good/decent offensive performers:

JRam- .868, 131
Reyes- .839, 122
Straw- .800, 117
Bradley- .796, 112

Ramos has been a positive addition as well, and has absolutely hit the shit out of the ball at an unsustainable rate since joining the team. He should be starting more games than Hedges IMO.

Clearly there's some defensive upside on this roster, but for the love of baby Jesus you have to be able to score a few runs against good pitching. The current lineup isn't much of a threat.

Very enlightening CATS but fWAR is not the only stat the matters, and it is not without flaws. Any GM in baseball would gladly take Santander over Mercado and Luplow in a heartbeat, fWAR be damned. You’re kidding yourself if you believe otherwise.

I dont agree.

First of all, every stat is flawed.

As Twain said, you have liars, damned liars, and statistics.

But whether Santander is better than Mercado and Luplow...or Zimmer and Harold...right now, or into the future, is not the point.

The point is that in the five years since being picked in the Rule Five, Santander hasn't done much of anything, while we've had several past and present who have done more. Santander wouldn't have made a difference one way or the other. He has been a non factor.

If Santander was playing for the Indians right now, folks on this forum would be b* tching about him. He would be in the conversation at to which outfielder to retain for next year...and he would be losing to Zimmer.

Crying about losing Santander is not like crying over spilled milk. Its like crying for no reason.

BTW, Santander will be going to his second arby this year. He already costs more than the others we still have and Luplow...and will cost more next year.

In an accumulative aspect I think you're mostly right about Santander CATS, but I'd take his 2019 and 2020 seasons over any of our current options. Either way, I'm not upset that Santander is not on this roster which I think is the point you're emphasizing. We could/should do better than Santander if we're looking to upgrade our corner OFers.

I gotta say I'm a little bummed that we don't have anybody on the top half of the list. I think I remember bimbo saying we just don't pimp our guys much for this type of thing.
On the bright side we do have 4 players on the list. I don't remember us having 4 players on the list in quite some time.

Freeman, Jones and Arias all have a good probability to make their MLB debut next season. Jones is a borderline Sept call up, but I think we will see all three in 22 and maybe even to everyday roles in 23...

Anyone have any thoughts/insights on Jhonkensy Noel sticking at 3rd base? It seems like there is no way looking at his defensive stats.

Numbers agree with ya, but I haven't actually sat down and watched film of him at 3B. I always projected him at 1B mostly because we have like none in our system...

Espino was just added as #100 because someone graduated from the list. Rocchio has to be pounding on the door.

Doubt it.

As of now also doubt they leave it to chance though too.

Did a real good job of prepping for the 40 man crunch in comparison to most teams facing the same dilemma at the deadline, which was their mindset for pretty much the entire season as mentioned in here for months...they will protect the guys they need to protect.

I hope Kwan is considered one of them, but I think I know the answer and I don't like it. Any insights on his org standing?

He has the minors best (by far) SwStr at 2,1%, next best is at 4%, next best in our system is Freeman's at 6,1%.

Kwan plays a good CF and has a nice batted ball profile with lots of LD and more FB than GB, which fueled his power surge.

Bimbo, if you had to put a % number to Kwan's chance of being rostered, what would it be?
