2021 Season | Series #49 | Indians @ Royals | Sep. 28-30

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm conflicted on Harold Ramirez. Last night was a great example.

In his first at-bat he struck out on four pitches, swinging and missing the last two, both out of the zone.

Next at-bat he swung at a fastball at armpit level and fouled it off, ultimately grounding out on a 2-2 pitch.

In the sixth with Josie on third and a 3-2 count he swung at a 98 mph fastball that was at least 6" off the outside corner. It should have been strike three but somehow he got a piece of it. The next pitch was also 98 and well off the corner and he swung again at ball four, and somehow hit a ground ball into right field with the second baseman playing up the middle.

In the seventh he swung at a fastball at the knees and drilled a hard ground ball through the left side to drive in another run.

One strikeout and three ground balls, two of which found holes and drove in a run. Several swings at pitches well out of the zone - one resulting in a base hit. The guy has no plate discipline, never walks, can't put the ball in the air to save his life, gets himself out all the time chasing bad pitches, and is a sieve in the outfield. It's between him and Shelley Duncan as to the worst fielding outfielders in recent memory.

But he's hitting .371 with runners in scoring position and .324 with RISP and two out. Last night he was 2-for-2 with RISP.

I could see him as a DH for the Guardians next year with Reyes in right field. Franmil is a far superior outfielder from what little I've seen of him. He might hit better if he plays the field, too. But I would prefer a DH who gets some extra base hits and takes his walks when the pitches are out of the zone.

If we can annoint Gose as a lock to make the roster after only 5.2 IP, why can't we move on from Garza after 24 IP?

We can't keep everybody.

You're going to DFA Garza because he's 28 and isn't Eli Morgan?..

The same Garza who will have two minor league options

The same Garza who can be sent to the minors to work on becoming more eli-esque?.

The same Garza that has less than 25 innings of major league experience..

Of course..it's time to move on.. ridiculous..
I didn't say to DFA him. I agree he should go back to the minors. He has a great arm and can throw in the upper 90's. When I said he won't be on the team I meant the 25-man roster.

All this talk about Harold being a DH.

Harold is 27 yrs old. He has 809 career PAs. He has been a throw in a deal by one team and let go by two others.

And his career production is 8% below average.

Thats a DFA, not a DH.

Guys like Hill, Nelson, Perez, Garza, Moss, Wittgren are on the bubble for making this team... We need to protect Morris, Cantillo plus maybe Pilkington, Scott, and Jerson Ramirez (Broom also but his 21 wasn't great)...

So its not like we have a ton of pitching to protect, it is mostly hitters in 22...

We need to put this whole Franmil in the OF nonsense to bed. No way, no how.

There is a way and a how, but that totally rests upon Franmil's shoulders. Put the work in and benefit from it or remain the same with the same results. He's not a bad OF by any means, but his mobility needs to improve. What he needs to do is spend the offseason with Bradley and do what he does.

I'm not conflicted with any of HRam, Zimmer, or Mercado. If a better option presents itself then they're goners. The best way I can describe them is replaceable. They should be the easiest to upgrade and there may be a few exposed during the R5 that would be worth taking a look at. Jones could win a corner OF spot with a strong ST showing.

If you want Franmil to play the OF I'm cool with that, but I'd rather see OGon promoted and DH than HRam. I understand the reluctance to replace someone like Amed with a good prospect, but someone like HRam should never prevent getting a look at a good performing minor leaguer that is ready for a promotion. IMO of course.

I feel like we can give OGonz an MLB spot over HRam without a doubt in my mind.

While I concede that OGon could fall flat, I'd prefer to take a chance on his upside rather than watch HRam again. Risky? Yes, but the payoff is better.

Well also he will have all three option years left as well...

Good point. Rostering him doesn't mean he has to be on the 26 man.

OGonz has legitimately earned a chance to make a big league roster in 22. He will walk to another organization if we dont add him to our 40 man roster, so I think 22 is the most important year for his career since he will get a chance with some team for the pros.

Especially if the National League adopts the DH which seems quite likely.

Agreed. If he isn't on the 40 man he will get claimed. Especially if the NL add the DH next season.

He will simply be a FA and will have options galore. Hell he could even receive decent deal offers from the KBO or NPB.

Bottom line - an un-rostered Oscar Gonzalez is an Oscar GONE-zalez.

Showing myself out now. See ya in a bit....
