I'm conflicted on Harold Ramirez. Last night was a great example.
In his first at-bat he struck out on four pitches, swinging and missing the last two, both out of the zone.
Next at-bat he swung at a fastball at armpit level and fouled it off, ultimately grounding out on a 2-2 pitch.
In the sixth with Josie on third and a 3-2 count he swung at a 98 mph fastball that was at least 6" off the outside corner. It should have been strike three but somehow he got a piece of it. The next pitch was also 98 and well off the corner and he swung again at ball four, and somehow hit a ground ball into right field with the second baseman playing up the middle.
In the seventh he swung at a fastball at the knees and drilled a hard ground ball through the left side to drive in another run.
One strikeout and three ground balls, two of which found holes and drove in a run. Several swings at pitches well out of the zone - one resulting in a base hit. The guy has no plate discipline, never walks, can't put the ball in the air to save his life, gets himself out all the time chasing bad pitches, and is a sieve in the outfield. It's between him and Shelley Duncan as to the worst fielding outfielders in recent memory.
But he's hitting .371 with runners in scoring position and .324 with RISP and two out. Last night he was 2-for-2 with RISP.
I could see him as a DH for the Guardians next year with Reyes in right field. Franmil is a far superior outfielder from what little I've seen of him. He might hit better if he plays the field, too. But I would prefer a DH who gets some extra base hits and takes his walks when the pitches are out of the zone.
