Wittgren should never have been in there but we are probably the only team in the last 50 years that does not have a left-handed relief pitcher (except for Hentges who just arrived yesterday).
Wittgren had to face a gauntlet of left-handed hitters; Kiermaier, Wendle, and Choi. He was not the right guy but management didn't give Tito many options.
The injuries to our key starters means more innings for the bullpen and Tito has used Shaw, Clase, and Karinchak so much they were not available in the 9th. This is the ripple effect of having to use minor league starters who can't go more than five innings.
