Hot take here: if he stays healthy and the knees aren't a concern, isn't AJ Griffin a better long term prospect than Paolo Banchero? I'm a much bigger fan of his skills and overall package than Paolo's.
Can't really explain why I'm a bit lukewarm on Banchero, I just don't really like his archetype of score first power forwards who don't have C size, aren't great floor spacers and don't project as defensive difference makers. There's a lot of examples like Melo, Randle, even Blake Griffin, who can put up a ton of numbers and be the number one option but their on-court impact doesn't quite hit that elite level. And that's IF Banchero hits as a prospect.
That's interesting, I hadn't really thought of him like that. I kinda viewed him as that sort of triple threat 4, give him the ball in the mid post and let him iso his man. Do his handling, shooting and playmaking carry over at the 3? I feel like you get into spacing issues given his tendencies to play 20 feet and in. Until he extends his range to 3, you'll get into a Carmelo-like math problem where mid range jumpers with the occasional drive and/or free throws doesn't keep pace with efficient spread offense. And I'd rather he defend bigger/slower guys given how strong he is rather than chase his man over screens. That said, I'm definitely on the low end of guys on him so I can see why people think different.Just fluidity of movement, shooting stroke, handle, creation flash........isn't he definitely an NBA 3? Not a huge Banchero fan but see his value on the wing.
My model likes Griffin a lot but Griffin also looks far more like a secondary scorer when you watch his film. Would be a great fit next to Garland but if you don't have a #1, Paolo looks like he actually has that skillset, even if it is rough around the edges.
24. Cleveland Cavaliers: E.J. Liddell (Ohio State, PF, Senior)
33. Cleveland Cavaliers (via Rockets): Justin Lewis (Marquette, SF/PF, Redshirt Freshman)
38. Cleveland Cavaliers (via Spurs): Julian Champagnie (St. John's, SF/PF, Junior)
This would be an awesome haul...
