Plesac with 21 earned runs allowed in 19.2 innings in four of his last five starts. The other start he allowed 2 runs in 6 innings against the lowest scoring team in the majors.
After retiring eight in a row to start the game they rocked him the second time through the order.
For the season batters are hitting .372 the third time they face him in a game. Once they've seen his pitches a couple of times he poses no problem. And a better hitting team like Houston can get to him the second time. If I were Tito I would strongly consider replacing him with Eli Morgan.
Jose's first inning at-bat is a candidate for "at-bat of the year", right up there with Naylor's 9th inning, 2-out grand slam to tie game against the White Sox. His ability to foul off tough pitches that were out of the zone until Valdez made a mistake was incredile. Jose was only hitting .162 right-handed coming in so that at-bat should get him going from the right side.
I'm not sure why you would start an infielder hitting .200 with no power in left field. To Ernie's credit he did get a couple of hits, which is more than Kwan would have gotten against one of the best lefties in the league. I guess you just gamble that he doesn't get any difficult balls in left field, but that wasn't the case last night.
This wasn't a bad loss because it was our worst starter against a guy who had only allowed four runs in his last three starts plus being on the road. But it was a little frustrating because Plesac was throwing 93-94 mph and his slider was breaking hard. He got ahead 0-2 on a lot of batters and could not put them away. He also had two innings where he had two outs and nobody on and still gave up runs. Like they say, the third out is the hardest to get.
