There is an option to giving Arias/Freeman a chance.

We could trade them, and/or others in order to improve the team elsewhere.

The one thing we can't do is not trade them while not playing them.

*********

As the roster stands right now, and assuming a catcher is acquired (safe assumption), we look like something like this....

Bo
Catcher

Bell
Josh

Jose
Amed
Gimenez

Kwan
Straw
Oscar
Brennan

That leaves two positions for Arias, Freeman, Miller, Benson, Palacios, and maybe Fry.

One of the two have to be able to play both INF and OF.

Zunino's defensive value historically has come from framing. Otherwise he's an average to below defensive catcher recently, and he's not a good hitter either. I'm fine with him and have mentioned him but I really wouldn't want to give him more than 1 guaranteed year when robo strike zones might be coming in 2024. Then you're left with a likely below average defensive catcher who can't hit.

If he wants more than 1 year I'd rather just go with Hedges honestly.

I believe once another big name SS come off the board, we will take some Rosario calls. Doesn't mean we will be trading him by any means, but come at us with a creative offer late in the game and we may move on it.
Nationals get: Amed Rosario
Guardians get: Lane Thomas
Cavs get: Kyle Kuzma
Wizards get: Caris LeVert

Feels like a pretty balanced trade between Cleveland and Washington DC. In order to make the trade fit the NBA's trade rules, the Guardians offer to eat some of Caris LeVert's salary.

Don't give me that look. You asked for creative! :chuckle:

He's got a point though... it would be Kwan, Williams plus OGonz...

Either way, it's way, way too much lol
They aren't gonna get that. That's just the sticker price.

Murphys value isn't going to go up.

Remember, players aren't traded, contracts are traded....and the contract shrinks every day of the season.

Its kinda like saying that Biebers trade value will go up if he wins another CY....but that isn't how it works. His earning power will go up, but his trade value will go down.

I actually disagree... His style of bat and play isn't that hard to keep up...
I actually think that Kwan is a very realistic candidate for improvement.

The last thing that develops for a hitter with a solid contact foundation is power.
And that includes little guys. (See: Altuve, Jose and Ramirez, Jose.)

Hate to say this but Kwan is also a candidate for regression.
Nah, he got even better as the season went on.

That said, with a years worth of MLB at bats in the books, opposing pitchers may have a better idea on how to attack him. Doubt we'll see any prolonged weakness exposed, but I guess it is possible.

Gimenez and Ogonz are your "regression" candidates IMO and neither one has red alert klaxons blaring.

Nootbaar is not Kwan.

Graceffo is not Williams.

More like Oscar and Bibee.
Graceffo is not Bibee either who has probably moved ahead of Williams. That's coming from a Graceffo fan.

Oakland went 60-102 last year.

This idea that they would ask any team for 3 players already in the majors for Murphy just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not saying they aren't asking for a huge haul, but 3 guys already in the majors doesn't seem to fit their timeline at all.

Kwan's BABIP was .323, which was 30th in the MLB.

Kwan's K% was 9.4%, which was 2nd best in the MLB.

To maintain or improve both of these numbers is highly unlikely.

Power would be the more likely way to improve.

You can argue that Kwan's BABIP is due to luck, but you can also counter-argue that a lot had to do with spraying it around the field.

K% and BB% are unlikely to be very luck-based (it's just statistics of randomness - lower % things have a lower standard deviation) so as long as he keeps up his same result he should have similar results there.

IMO you can expect his K% and BB% to be roughly the same while his BABIP likely goes down a bit. But I expect him to add a little power at the same time. So trading a little AVG/OBP for SLG is a fine trade for me...

Also relative to the league he'll decline just because the rest of the league will improve more with the shift gone.
