2023 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As I pointed out a week ago, Nic Had to be rostered on Miami’s 26 or land on another team’s 26 man otherwise he is offered/sent back to us (or traded back to Miami for compensation/PTBNL) As his rehab assignment was coming to an end

He can be non-40-man upon return?

What’s his pitching like?

With the struggles of some of the bullpen guys this year having another guy potentially ready to be at the MLB level would be a nice insurance policy.

Yes as it was first time selected. Just as if DFA by us and passes waivers (like Lava). If he is selected again in Rule 5 (next year) and doesn’t make it, then it’s 2nd DFA and he chooses if he wants FA, I believe.

Only difference with R5 guy is if he makes another teams 26 man, same rule 5 rules apply. That team can’t just DFA him a week later and expect to keep him like other DFAs.

I think your missing a few nuances in the process.

If Enright clears the overall waiver process, the Marlins have to offer him back to CLE at half the cost of the R5 pick selection. IIRC each R5 pick is $100k so the offer back price is $50k.

If CLE declines to bring him back, them Miami can outright Nic to the minors. He would no longer be on a 40 man roster and no longer subject to a return to drafted from team mechanism.

A player cannot refuse their 1st outrighting from a 40 man roster but after that 1st time in their career, they can decline an outright offer from a team and become a free agent down the road. Teams are able to DFA a player and decline giving an outright offer to a player which would also make a player a free agent at that point.

If CLE wanted Nic back & paid the $50k for the return, Nic would not be on the 40 man roster until added at some future point by CLE. This was because Nic was not on the 40 man roster & eligible to be drafted in December during the R5.

Let's see if Nic gets returned to CLE or not. If he does get returned I am sure myself & others would dig out the old scouting reports on Nic.
For the latest info: Nic was #17 on Miami list for Baseball America in their prospect handbook for 2023. He was not listed/ reported on by Baseball Prospectus or Prospect Digest. The Miami list is not posted for Fangraphs.

For a quick posting I found the writeup on the MLB pipline site. Nic was #23 of 30.

While Enright had Tommy John surgery in his second year at Virginia Tech and compiled a 5.22 ERA in his three healthy seasons, the Guardians liked his fastball/curveball combination enough to sign him for $75,000 as a 20th-rounder in 2019. He has had much more success as a pro, recording a 2.80 ERA, a .193 opponent average and 5.7 K/BB ratio in three seasons before the Marlins selected him in the Rule 5 Draft in December. Diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma two weeks later, he completed his first cycle of treatment shortly before the start of Spring Training and was only slightly behind schedule after not being able to throw for a month.

Enright's fastball and curveball play well off of each other because there's a 15-mph velocity difference and 40 inches of vertical separation between the two offerings. His heater parks at 90-91 mph and tops out at 94 with elite useful spin rates and carry up in the strike zone, while his mid-70s downer curveball plummets at the plate. He also misses bats with a low-80s slider with horizontal action and can mix in a low-80s changeup with fade.
Enright's lack of overpowering stuff leaves him little margin for error, but he rarely makes mistakes because he has plus control and commands his pitches where he wants. Miami can't send him to the Minors in 2023 without putting him on waivers and offering him back to Cleveland for half of his $100,000 Rule 5 price. He's polished enough to stick with the big league club when fully healthy, though the Marlins deepened their bullpen by trading for Matt Barnes and A.J. Puk this winter.

MT88 - Thanks for clarifying it (knew the intricacy but too late at night after long weekend to get into the specifics - was trying the cliff note version and failed).

Here was FG post-Rule 5 notes
Nic Enright, SIRP, from the Cleveland Guardians
The Marlins add a low-variance bullpen contributor in Enright, whose low-90s fastball tends to sneak past hitters at the letters because of its angle. Enright’s tall-and-fall style delivery and overhand arm action help his slider stay hidden on release, as the pitch doesn’t pop out of his hand. He’s a low leverage relief option who might move into a more significant role if his fastball velocity can continue to climb.

From Miami Herald -
Enright, 25, was the Guardians’ 20th-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Virginia Tech and finished the 2022 season with Cleveland’s Triple A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers. In 37 innings over 29 appearances with the Clippers, Enright posted a 2.68 ERA with 50 strikeouts against just six walks while holding opponents to a .216 batting average.

He is a fastball-slider pitcher. His fastball while only having a velocity in the low-90s has “some of the best carry in the minors, which makes it a bat-misser that he can dot the zone with,” according to Baseball America. As for his slider, it “generates plenty of swings and misses as well, and serves as an excellent chase pitch when he gets ahead in counts.”

As for how likely he is to move from waivers. It is mid-season where some of the bottom-11 teams are building for next year (like Wash when they choose Call from us in the DFA process). Yet, this is harder as Enright is still recovering a bit from stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma. His rehab results have been impressive - 1.06 Whip in 16 innings (16 hits, 1 walk and 18 Ks. But, ERA has not been the best at 3.94 with .244 BAA. He was built up to 3 innings of work an outing but then was going 1-1.1 innings the last 2 outings to be able to go every other night vs a few days rest.

It looks like he was trying to add a few pitches to the "FB/Slider" combo like a change-up and curve. His FB/Cutter the last go around was 89.5 average (so down from last year if proper gun). And, going back to prior week, his FB only (no extra cutter computer guess) was 91 which is his average per BA 90-91 and peaked 93 vs 94 last year. Yet, the game in-between and the same gun as the last outing (with low reading) recorded 91.3 average topping out at 93.5. So, my theory is the 1-day rest got to him and thus down on velocity but part of his pen build-up process.

Last few outting, he was trying to locate his FB as he was leaving it out over the plate. In the last 2 outtings, the FB location was more around the edges. His slider down and away to first base side and working on a change-up to 3rd base side with possibly a few curveballs thrown in. His slider still may need work as it was mainly down and out of the zone in his 3rd last outing (and not generating much swings out of the zone). He has been going away from it to get his Change and FB to work. Thus, is this slider the last piece to be ready for MLB or did he already have it in side session thus put it in his back pocket for now? If we look at his 4th last outing, his slider was actually nailing just outside the bottom corner of zone (I mean computer was mean and gave him nothing touching that line vs a human ump he would have fared better). Thus, if he got his slider working where he could hit that corner (didn't miss by much) and the tighter one with more bite to get people to chase, he is getting close to 100%. ready. I would think a team like Washington or Oakland may throw out a flyer and take him and see if this "week" DFA process and bullpen sessions is enough to get him to where he can be an effective 8th man to eat 2 innings or so and rise through the ranks given more opportunities to recover. Yet, most definitely, Guardians would be stupid not to offer $50,000 to get him back from Miami and be a depth reliever piece (off 40 man) that we lack in AAA with Miko/Misa injuries and K Kelly also being selected.

gives us some depth but with Gaddis and curry being replaced too with Civale and McK and Herrin in AAA, doubt we need the depth but welcomed. Wish him well.

On the plus side, if you drop one disastrous appearance on May 9th, Herrin has had 10 clean AAA appearances, going (in total of 11 games) 13.2 in, 5 hits, 6 walks and 15Ks (2 hits and 2 walk were in that 1 game so 3 hits and 4 walks otherwise in 10 games). He is working on his curve and Sinker as well as his FB/Slider locations. Think he will be nasty when it all comes together (if there is room in the bull-inn).

I think it may have been mentioned.

I wonder if anyone is talking about Amed Rosario this year?

I'd love to know what offers the FO turned down for those two. They've burned down any value and got shitty performance on top of it. Classic lose-lose. The same is happening with Quantrill. Gotta be more proactive
