Sickening. How many ways can you find to throw away a win?
1. A balk with two out (and then retire the batter at the plate). Curry went into his stretch, checked the runners, forgot he was in the stretch, and then went into his windup. Just gifted them a run.
2. A dropped pop-up by Jose with two outs allowed the runner to score.
3. Hentges stood on the mound on a ground ball down the first base line. Bell, a horrible defensive first baseman, finally made a great play and came up with the ball but by now Hentges was late and the runner was safe. Not getting the out extended the inning and the Phillies scored on a ground ball that would have been the third out.
This should have been a 3-1 win.
There were lots of goats today. Hentges, in addition to failing to cover first, gave up a double and a triple and two more earned runs, bringing his total to 13 over his last 4 innings.
Rosario, pinch hitting with two out and a runner at second, swung and missed at three breaking balls well below the zone. The last one was the lowest. Just a horrible at-bat.
Gimenez, with Straw at first and nobody out in the bottom of the 9th, swung at a pitch out of the zone with Straw getting a great jump, fouling it off. Now with two strikes on him he chased a pitch out of the zone and grounded into a double play. Fry homered with two out, but without the double play it's a two-run homer and the game is over.
Jose and Josh Naylor went a combined 0-for-10. In the 10th with the bases loaded and nobody out Jose chased two pitches well out of the zone, fouling them off. On a 3-2 count he got one middle middle and popped it up. Then Naylor chased a bad pitch on an 0-1 count and popped out.
On the bright side, Kwan had four hits and Michael Kelly continues to be unscored on. He needs to take Hentges' spot. Hentges should only pitch in games where we are way behind. He gave up a double and a triple, both on fastballs above the zone. Hitters should not be able to square up a 95-96 mph fastball above the strike zone, but they're doing it to Sam.
Frustration! They still took two of three, but it should have been a sweep.
