2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bit of an odd choice to add. Has been awful in relief this year after mixing in starts last year. Walks way too many, along with hitting guys. Not sure how they see him fitting in. Cash was probably not enough to feed a family of 4 at McDonald's.
One thing to consider is that Antonetti has been pretty good at finding decent pitchers under rocks. Parsons, for example, is 31 with a career 6.84 ERA, but he's given us 4 scoreless innings to far and Vogt says he is "thrilled" to have him.

Strzelecki, a 29-year-old with 74 big league innings, has given us two scoreless innings so far. Ben Lively, 32, has 8 career wins and a 5.01 ERA. He pitched 5 innings with one ER in Fenway last night.

If Antonetti thinks Avila can help us I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He's wild as hell (6 walks, a hit batter, and 3 wild pitches in 8 innings) but maybe the pitching factory can fix a flaw and get him in the zone. His BAA is .179, hard hit percentage is 31%, and BABIP is .222. Hitters aren't squaring him up and his K/9 is over 10. He's obviously got some stuff. Maybe they think some tinkering will pay off.

They essentially got him for nothing and he's only 27.

They saw something in Trevor Stephan and picked him up for nothing. Another example.

So…my timing for TM going on the DL for the year was off…I predicted it’d be last week. But it sure seems inevitable.

Amazing that people were/ are so against the Covid vaccine shots being forced upon them but will slam another person making a personal choice to not have an extensive medical surgery done to them.

It was TMac’s choice. We need to respect the decision he made for himself.

I mean, people are allowed to disagree with his decision, right?

Considering I’m not a doctor, I don’t have an opinion. This sounds a lot like Bimbo’s comments that if a pitcher can handle the pain, they can pitch through this type of injury without a huge risk of further injuring themselves.

Man, that Civale trade looks more and more suspect every day. Trading a solid Starting Pitcher with Biebers and Mckenzies injury history just never felt like that right move to me, especially with the supposed injury epidemic we keep hearing about.

Perception and the diet of information consumed on the subject is what matters here.

But a very astute point.

So then who were you keeping out of the rotation?

Bieber?
McKenize?
Bibee?
Allen?
Williams?

In hindsight it’s easy to say since some of them NOW have injuries /are out but you start the offseason planning on all to be healthy and having only five rotation spots.

Civale also averaged about ~114 innings and ~21 starts per season in 2021, 2022, and 2023 which (excluding 2024 because TBD) are the only full length seasons he was on the opening day roster. And there isn't one outlier season there that is weighing everything down- he's missed 9+ starts each of the past 3 seasons.

Civale has been very good for Tampa this year as well - luckily Manzardo is a great prospect and should be a middle of the order contributor as soon as this summer.

Still though, with Bieber now done for the season and previous durability concerns with McKenzie, Espino, and to a lesser extent, Gavin Williams, our rotation outlook is not looking particularly great. Might be time to consider going out and making a move for a starter with a year or two of control just to keep the ship steady this season.

Bibee and Allen have both struggled early. Cookie has been alright but pretty lucky and is nothing more than a fringe #5 starter at this point in his career. Curry was encouraging in his first start and deserves more opportunities. Still, I'm assuming we'll be getting the "McKenzie out for season" headline any day now, and a rotation of:

1) Williams
2) Bibee
3) L. Allen
4) Curry
5) Cookie

...probably isn't enough to cut it if we want to contend barring Williams and Bibee merging into legitimate top of the rotation guys.

I think you’re always looking for FOR guys… not solid pitchers. I liked Civale but if you’re offered an impact bat prospect for a MOR guy in an organization that can develop pitching, you gotta do it.

The best case study on MOR guys not being FOR guys is Cal Quantrill.

Triston is just an unfortunate situation for all involved. But injuries and promotions have magnified our lack of depth. But I don’t regret the Civale trade whatsoever.
