2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We are cookin' with fish grease my friend, had the same thought as we won this Boston series again.

Keep the focus day to day and just attempt to keep putting together strings of 2-1 series wins. Focus straight onto the day at hand for these younger men and have pitchers at the ready for situational swaps as Steve-Vo has so readily done thus far!

He's been killing it with his utilization of Gaddis, Sandlin, Curry, and Herrrin here thus far. Sidebar but I super love the option of the varied release point of the Sandman from our bullpen. Even as a youth I had an odd affinity for submariner style pitchers or guys with funky deliveries such as his. He's done an exemplary job this season of keeping the ball down in the zone with his breaking pitches on the year!
If we're trading bats for arms Rocchio might still fetch a decent arm with less control.

With Arias Rocchio and Freeman losing prospect status along with Manzardo and DeLauter later this summer the system is starting to look barren.

Exaggerating that they rarely pitch into the 6th inning? Or all of them have a 4.5+ ERA?
I'm Bauer's last season the Dodgers won 106 games and made the NLCS. Guess his personality didn't stop them from winning games

Many of his teammates publicly stated their pleasure that he was no longer there when he got kicked off the team in June

I just don’t see how this helps your point.

You can’t convince people who don’t want to understand.

Many of Bauer’s problems would be solved with apologies or remorse, neither of which he is ever willing to provide.

Many more would be solved by being open to coaching — but he’s often unwilling to be coachable or responsible for the rules which apply to everyone else.

Even if diehard apologists weirdly try to make excuses and make nonsensical points on his behalf, Trevor Bauer’s absence from MLB is because of Trevor Bauer and nobody else.

Seems like a tough pill to swallow for some.

Crazy, maybe there is a reason Bauer cant find a job in MLB despite having a top 10 job

As sportscoach accidentally pointed out — guys like Marcel Ozuna or Chapman get chances to redeem.

How malignant and unapologetic is Bauer that he can’t?

It’s harder for some fans to admit what is right in front of them. Let’s kick up the trade deadline thread to talk about REAL options.

Mookie Betts says differently,
“My experience with Bauer is not anything remotely close to what everyone else’s experience is. I love him. I think he’s an awesome guy. The personal things? I have no control. I have no say. Obviously, nothing ever came from it.

“He’s an awesome pitcher. He’s a great guy, somebody who wants to take the mound every fifth day. But, at the end of the day, I don’t make the decision. That’s a decision that’s not as simple as baseball."

I really don't care about Bauer personally. Just what helps Cleveland win. I bet someone signs him this year.

Do you think the starting pitching is good for this team? Is it sustainable to rely on this bullpen to this degree?

No, I don't think the starting pitching has been good.

I also think we've been spoiled as fans by the great starting rotations the Guardians and Indians have trotted out every single year over the past 10 or so seasons. Those rotations were not the norm. I do think we will see some positive regression from Bibee and Allen. I don't expect McKenzie to avoid the DL much longer, and I'm going to believe Williams pitches this season when I see it.

I don't think there is a single free agent pitcher out there who will make a meaningful difference in this area either. If there were, they would be signed. If the Guardians want to upgrade their rotation this season, it will have to come via trade.

I think the concern for the bullpen is overblown. The point of having a deep bullpen is to use it. If the Guardians only had 2-3 really good relievers and relied heavily on the same handful of guys all year, I'd be more concerned. They have plenty of arms, and they have two more coming back from injury soon. I think the bullpen will likely become this pitching staff's identity as the season moves along.

The juice has to be worth the squeeze, Bauer is just a special level asshole.

If you get rid of a cancer, you dont invite it back.

One of my favorite

Forget apologies or remorse, he just needed to be willing to shut the fuck up for a few months and get his house in order privately.

Thank you for asking a question about the 2024 Cleveland Guardians, who lead the majors in wins after 25 games. This is apparently not an interesting topic to some on this board, so I appreciate your interest.

The starting pitching is not good enough, IMO. So far they've been getting away with short starts and high ERA's because of an offense that ranks 4th in the majors in runs per game, a bullpen that leads the majors in ERA and WAR, and a defense that ranks 8th in runs saved above average. They also rank 3rd in speed and 8th in baserunning.

The other factor has been an easy schedule so far.

This team is doing everything well except for starting pitching. The starters rank 25th in innings pitched and 26th in FIP, but 12th in ERA, which indicates they are getting a lot of help from their defense and maybe some luck. They're 25th in walk percentage.

The big problem has been losing Bieber and Gavin Williams to injuries plus their decision to trade Aaron Civale last year. This rotation would be one of the best in baseball with Bieber, Williams, and Civale at the top. Civale has a 3.90 ERA after five starts this year.

Also, McKenzie is still trying to find his mojo after missing almost all of last season and Bibee and Logan Allen have regressed.

The good news is that Bibee has allowed 3 earned runs in his last two starts covering 10.1 innings. McKenzie has allowed 3 earned runs in his last two starts covering 9 innings, striking out 13. He's still throwing too many pitches but you can see he's making strides.

Ben Lively has made two starts allowing 3 earned runs in 11.1 innings, striking out 14 against only one walk. Very, very encouraging. Last year he had a 3.76 ERA in 13 starts for the Reds before suffering a pectoral injury.

Xzavion Curry had one emergency start against the Red Sox in Fenway and shut them out on two hits for five innings. He's standing by.

The bad news: No telling when Gavin Williams makes it back and Carlos Carrasco is struggling. Logan Allen has a 5.06 ERA and has allowed 12 earned runs in his last 13 innings.

But if Bibee and McKenzie continue to improve, Lively continues to pitch at the same level as his first two starts, and we get Curry into the rotation we might be OK with those four and either Carrasco or Allen as the 5th starter. I'm not optimistic about either of them.

Allen has had one good start out of five. He tops out at 91 mph and doesn't have an out pitch. Carrasco is 37 and has allowed 13 hits and 7 runs in his last two starts. I think he's running on fumes.

Unless Williams comes back 100% or Allen gets untracked the Guardians will need to trade for a starter. They have nobody in the minors.

Well there will be 1-1 pick ... don't sleep on
Churio - Was supposed to have added power over the winter (his weak point) which is .959 OPS suggests
Valezquez is just .328/.983 in his first full year
Francisca was just .316/919 in his first year (best prosect ranking since Valera signing ...)
Genao is the next SS prospect at .318/.850 this year

And you forgot Martinez .... There are a lot of exciting guys and with a young lineup (outside of Jose and Naylor), nothing really needs to be added for bats ....

I think the Guardians' female fans don't give a rat's ass what Mookie Betts thinks. The public relations problem signing Bauer would create would dwarf the Deshaun Watson problem the Browns had to deal with.

Right now things could not be going better and the fans are getting excited about this young team. There is a ton of positivity right now. I can't believe the Guardians would even consider injecting a controversy like this, even if Bauer himself would consider coming back here.

We sincerely aren't as barren as some believe, the problem is we do have a gap in a sense. We have a lot of new guys/low inning guys at A+ and low A... We shall see who steps up...

Personally I couldn't care less about some female fans in their feelings. I'd rather win a world series.

I wonder if a team like Atlanta may take the roll of the dice on him IF they need more pitching?

Cleveland in my mind, isn't at the spot to merit gambling on a Bauer yet. On paper we are super young and need to get the guys we do have innings/ABs... I think we are a couple players away from a WS title so just getting one, especially that has off the field troubles, makes little sense to me right now.

Now, let's say the FO does in all on type of move aka Mike Trout type of bat... I think we could gamble on a Bauer type then to finish out the roster.

PR wise, yeah Bauer would be a hit, but they are like, we are going for it all!

Right now we don't have a way to cover that PR nightmare... IF we brought in a Trout and Bauer, you could cover to be like, "let's give Bauer a second chance, he will have influences like Trout to keep him in line. We want to win it all and Bauer has the talent to help get us there"

We all want to add some SP help, I'm not looking at Bauer but a guy like Blackburn from the A's... Ryan Feltner from the Rockies... etc...
