2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We sincerely aren't as barren as some believe, the problem is we do have a gap in a sense. We have a lot of new guys/low inning guys at A+ and low A... We shall see who steps up...

But, we got to see what we have in Rocchio/Arias in full season ... then Valera/Rodriquez and even Halpin..... Thus, little bit of bump at A+ level in Lake is fine -- and even there is Kayfus.

Thank you for asking a question about the 2024 Cleveland Guardians, who lead the majors in wins after 25 games. This is apparently not an interesting topic to some on this board, so I appreciate your interest.

The starting pitching is not good enough, IMO. So far they've been getting away with short starts and high ERA's because of an offense that ranks 4th in the majors in runs per game, a bullpen that leads the majors in ERA and WAR, and a defense that ranks 8th in runs saved above average. They also rank 3rd in speed and 8th in baserunning.

The other factor has been an easy schedule so far.

This team is doing everything well except for starting pitching. The starters rank 25th in innings pitched and 26th in FIP, but 12th in ERA, which indicates they are getting a lot of help from their defense and maybe some luck. They're 25th in walk percentage.

The big problem has been losing Bieber and Gavin Williams to injuries plus their decision to trade Aaron Civale last year. This rotation would be one of the best in baseball with Bieber, Williams, and Civale at the top. Civale has a 3.90 ERA after five starts this year.

Also, McKenzie is still trying to find his mojo after missing almost all of last season and Bibee and Logan Allen have regressed.

The good news is that Bibee has allowed 3 earned runs in his last two starts covering 10.1 innings. McKenzie has allowed 3 earned runs in his last two starts covering 9 innings, striking out 13. He's still throwing too many pitches but you can see he's making strides.

Ben Lively has made two starts allowing 3 earned runs in 11.1 innings, striking out 14 against only one walk. Very, very encouraging. Last year he had a 3.76 ERA in 13 starts for the Reds before suffering a pectoral injury.

Xzavion Curry had one emergency start against the Red Sox in Fenway and shut them out on two hits for five innings. He's standing by.

The bad news: No telling when Gavin Williams makes it back and Carlos Carrasco is struggling. Logan Allen has a 5.06 ERA and has allowed 12 earned runs in his last 13 innings.

But if Bibee and McKenzie continue to improve, Lively continues to pitch at the same level as his first two starts, and we get Curry into the rotation we might be OK with those four and either Carrasco or Allen as the 5th starter. I'm not optimistic about either of them.

Allen has had one good start out of five. He tops out at 91 mph and doesn't have an out pitch. Carrasco is 37 and has allowed 13 hits and 7 runs in his last two starts. I think he's running on fumes.

Unless Williams comes back 100% or Allen gets untracked the Guardians will need to trade for a starter. They have nobody in the minors.
Couple of things. The schedule looks easy because we beat everyone

Civale? The guy cannot go over 120 innings a year. I would say trading Quantrill was more costly, but not missing him either.
Gavin will be back at some point. I would have Curry replace Cookie in the rotation now. The issue is going to be when Sticks goes to the DL. And it will happen

Personally I couldn't care less about some female fans in their feelings. I'd rather win a world series.
You probably should considering many females attend games, spend money on merch, watch on TV, etc... In this day and age right now where we don't know the future of our TV contract, this team needs revenue, like it or not.

I think the Guardians' female fans don't give a rat's ass what Mookie Betts thinks. The public relations problem signing Bauer would create would dwarf the Deshaun Watson problem the Browns had to deal with.

Right now things could not be going better and the fans are getting excited about this young team. There is a ton of positivity right now. I can't believe the Guardians would even consider injecting a controversy like this, even if Bauer himself would consider coming back here.
Bauer isn't just a non-option because of what female fans would think

Also, do you believe Betts is giving you his honest opinion? Of course not. There's no benefit to dragging another player in the media. You say nice things so you don't create a story and a shitstorm.

Seemed geniune to me. Could have gave a pc answer but said he loved the guy. Come on man

If the team wins they'll get over it and show up, spend money, ect just like Watson and the Browns

It's clear from this thread that it's not just "some female fans" that are angered/disgusted with Bauer's off field behavior.
Same as DeShawn Watson's off field stuff...it isn't just females opposed to his signing.

That said, all front offices weigh these variables and many others, then make a decision. Difference between TB and DW is Bauer burned bridges here, DW didn't. Whatever the consequences, I just don't see this front office bringing him back, even if they need his arm. It's like Kevin Porter Jr. and the Cavs....even if they needed his position, there is no way they bring him back. He burnt his bridge and shit the bed, same as Bauer.

He isn't eligible to come off the DL until May 28th, but some good news.

Not sure there’s even a spot for him. Hentges is coming back soon and he’s going to have a spot. With the way Herrin is pitching, you can’t send him down so he probably takes over Beede’s spot?

Then who are you getting rid of ? Avila has no options but the FO must have seen something with him. Sandlin had a rough outing yesterday has been very solid otherwise.

Not a pressing concern but yeah not sure there’s a spot for JK at the moment. But perhaps by end of May something will change.

with the number of SP's finding their way onto the IL.. and a limited number of useful arms for all areas of pitching.. having a surplus, even James Karinchak or another RP.. gives the Guardians one helluva trade chip... a helluva trade chip, indeed...

Edit: Using the surplus as a "Rotation/Bullpen" slot w/ three guys taking part each week.. (can be the same guys) Like the Big Dog.. it lets the RP Eat !..

He technically is the best FA SP available... so discussion with signing him makes some sense, but we have some peeps who are a bit too overly passionate about not bringing him in...

I feel like we are going to need SP reinforcements at some point this season. Nikhazy is out for a bit with an oblique injury and the SPs at AAA haven't been putting on good shows... I don't know where TMac ends up at the end of the season as well...

I'd rather go get a Blackburn personally, but A's aren't exactly an easy team to trade with...
Then they can talk about him here:

Karinchak has an option left so I would think if we don’t have an open spot on the 40 man or big league roster by the time he is back, then Avila (or Bebee if he’s still around) gets cut and Karinchak can go to Columbus.

A few thoughts:
- We currently are missing 4 of our top 10 prospects due to injury, and they are all upper level prospects
- I doubt we see DeLauter this year (even if he gets hot) because organization won't want to add him to 40-man roster (and won't have to add him in the off season unlike Manzardo) and because we have to give Valera a look (if he ever gets healthy) since he will be out of options next year
- I think Rodriguez would be in the majors right now if he were in several other organizations. He could replace Laureano at any time
- Our RP pipeline is fantastic, but our SP pipeline is shallow. We need to see progress with SP pipeline soon
- Getting 1.1 was a huge break in a draft that isn't deep. The pick and the extra money will immediately improve our system

“My experience with Bauer is not anything remotely close to what everyone else’s experience is.

Lol.

Everyone else, huh?

I appreciate you googling a quote of support, but the quote really says more about Bauer than I could.

I’ll never attack a player like Mookie for not slamming a guy publicly — which is what made his teammates public statements all the more impactful.

Did Mookie avoid slamming Bauer or did he say he loves the guy? Pretty big difference there.
