2024 Season | Series #9 | Guardians @ Braves | April 26-28, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I get it’s a game thread and people overreact, but the criticism of Vogt over his lineup moves after the start he’s had is just crazy. We’re really going to criticize using Gaddis in the 8th when he had been one of the best relievers in the MLB before today, and had been the setup man with no issues (and no complaining) for over a week before today? Even today, he allowed 2 runs on a ground rule double which hit the line and a pop fly that somehow dropped. Not a great outing by any means, but a couple of different breaks and we view the outing completely differently.

And before anyone forgets, people were complaining about Barlow until the last week with good reason. Bottom line, the bullpen won’t be perfect all year but I don’t see any valid reason why that was bad process. Maybe you yank Gaddis with runners at 2nd and 3rd 1 out, but arguing against him in the 8th inning is results vs process.

And I think Vogt deserves a lot of trust with the way he’s managed to push all the right buttons so far. Even when I think the process is poor, such as PHing Laureano for Brennan in the 11th, so far they’ve been working out.
Won't find any complaints from me. Vogt is doing a tremendous job so far. Putting Gaddis in in the 8th was the correct decision imo.

Vogt pushes buttons a lot.
He pushes them very well indeed.

Totally agree on both points. Gaddis by my count had 4 appearances as the setup man before today, 0 ERs and .75 WHIP. Don’t think anyone was complaining for those.

Vogt deserves credit for his willingness to mix and match bullpen roles and reward guys for performing well, and Gaddis deserves credit for earning the 8th inning role. Now let’s see how he rebounds from his 1st poor performance of the year.

I know I said beforehand that this series means nothing whether we get swept or sweep but I hope that bases loaded 0 outs situation fires up the Dolan's to be some big time buyers come deadline. Something special about this group.

There were so many factors for both teams last night that made it such a great game, win or lose.

The main thing was that both teams really ran hard and did a lot of fundamental things well. They also recovered quickly when something didn't go their way. They played smart. This was two very good teams putting on a show.

Plus, good and bad fortune played a hand in it for both teams.

When asked about his bunt, Kwan said, 'I never worry about putting down a bunt. It was the first thing I had to learn at Oregon State.'

*******

I'm reminded of something Tito said about Jose when he first came up. 'Every time I look up, he's in the middle of something good.'

In 70 years of watching Tribe baseball the best player I've ever seen in Cleveland was Robbie Alomar.

Thru his age 30 season he put up 43.7 fWAR. Jose has put up 45.2 fWAR thru age 30.

But Jose has done it in 270 fewer games and 1500 fewer PAs.

Robbie's best season in that time span was 6.1 fWAR. Jose has had seasons of 6.1, 6.4, 7.0 and 7.6.

Robbie's best three year stretch was in Cleveland at age 31-33. He put up 18.9 fWAR in his three years here.

Enjoy what you are watching, because you may never see it again.

You didn't, but that is what he does. He makes shit up and counters it. I started laughing when I read his response.

I mean, I think my point was a pretty easy one to follow.

Through his first 172 MLB PAs Rocchio has a .581 OPS, a .083 ISO, has been worth -0.5 fWAR while playing 90% of his defensive innings at a position with built in positive WAR value, has posted a -6 OAA, has a cumulative -1 baserunning value score, and a cumulative -2.8 DRtg.

Through his first 171 MLB PAs Arias had a .685 OPS, a .156 ISO, was worth 0.3 fWAR playing 90% of his defensive innings at 3B, 1B, and RF (1B and RF have negative defensive value built in for WAR), had posted a -1 OAA, had a cumulative 0.4 baserunning value score, and a cumulative -1.9 DRtg.

I know for a fact I can go back to June of last year (and even before then) and find posts from Cats or Tondo or anyone else in favor of Rocchio saying Arias wasn't doing enough and was being given too long of a leash and he sucks and they just don't ever see how he is going to develop into a good MLB player.

This isn't even about Rocchio vs Arias. It's just funny how now it's time for patience with guys when we are playing favorites instead of being impartial.

We've already seen plenty of flashes of it the past couple seasons, but if there was ever an opportune time (both for the franchise and for himself as a player) for him to officially take over the top spot in the rotation, it would be the year that their former Cy Young Award-winning ace went down after two dominant starts.

ETA: I really don't think a lot of fans truly grasp how incredible this organization has been with the amount of pitching talent and depth they've been able to develop over such a sustained period of time.

Even hearing about the injuries to the rotation to start the year, Stix getting off to a slow start and having some lingering injury concerns of his own, Gavin Williams not yet making an appearance, etc... I honestly didn't even consider the possibility that this team would miss a beat, that they'd somehow just be able to plug in someone, anyone, and figure out a way to compete and win games.

It sounds silly for me to say that I maybe just expect it or take it for granted, but this organization has certainly earned their reputation as an elite pipeline for pitching.

At this point I’d rather see the guy that plays better defense and can hit the shit out of the ball than the soft contact guy.

I'll keep saying it.

Until certain people leave or certain people are poached, I will never worry about the pitching for this organization.

We will continue to outperform peripherals with how we build our gameplans.

It feels like 6 of those positions are set in stone as far as guys you're willing to ride into October with--and then it's just whether they perform or not.

DH, RF and SS feel like they aren't "that dude" yet.

I'd like to start trying internal options ASAP. Manzardo should get a shot at 1B/DH. JRod needs to come up to get his chance before the youngsters behind him.
