Keeping a guy who can hit.. runs well.. but doesn't necessarily pick it well with the leather is always a possibility.. but, the Guardians would have to live with the consequences that include the loss of the contribution / ability / performance of Rosario's internal replacement: Gabriel AriasTruthfully, I am not thinking they would in real life. Via BTV they would have to, so that's how I set it up. But Rosario would net us at least a couple solid prospects.
Most of the teams after Rosario would be contenders so they wouldn't really want to trade anyone that could help them now. His value will be highest near the trade deadline. If Arias is playing well and Rosario is being at least league average, he will likely be moved for the best offer while Arias takes his spot.
Now it's possible we keep Rosario if he is playing well and we are in contention, but I doubt we will see him on the roster in 23...
Considering the return to the Guardians from the italicized statement as it is assumed the trade partner to the Guardians would be all FOR returning as little as possible for Rosario. The contradictory point of view would be in place for the Guardians.. That is.. the Guardians would absofuckingtively want the trade return to be someone who can help them now.. preferably, a younger player with plenty of control and/or cost certainty. This is where a deal either falls apart between two teams.. or a third team brings the right return to the Guardians (different day/different discussion)..
or..
..the deal is made with someone who has a guy who is near or ready now... and can help now.. but is blocked by a player that is performing well now..
Examples
Juan Yepez / Nolan Gorman... he ain't moving Arenado or Goldy off the corners..
William Contreras... he ain't moving d'Arnaud from behind the dish..
Drew Waters.... he ain't moving Acuna Jr from the lush green grass of Atlanta..
Jose Siri.... he ain't moving Tucker out of RF..
Ivan Herrera...
Andy Pages...
several others...
The list is endless... Being in favor of trading doesn't mean being against the guy being traded.. or of the belief the returnee is the answer to all questions.. It's the nature of baseball..
