23 Offseason GM Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
..you've said it yourself.. until a guy is performing at the highest level.. the question remains.. is he good enough???

note: not being able.. hasn't been determined..
Evidently I'm not making myself very clear today. I'll try to clear it up a bit. Nobody knows if Herrin is "good enough". What is painfully obvious is that he has the stuff/ability to be very good. There is a difference and having the ability doesn't always translate in ML success. Actually the list of players who had the ability and not make it in MLB is endless. Apologies for any confusion.

@sportscoach

Try using K.I.S.S. 15 player / four team trades means you have too much time on your hands..

This is the entire point of the comment..

Nothing is obvious when it comes to not having been given the chance to display such obvious talent... the list of players being discussed is one.. Tim Herrin..

Is it not obvious that he could help this team immediately as a LHRP? Emphasis on could.

You said Herrin had a spot on the roster... lol
I believe he does. I also said that he'll have to earn his way off of it too, but you didn't mention that. It's almost like you're looking to argue.

Naw, you literally said in the original posts he has a spot... I said he doesnt and has to earn it, not lose it...

They didn't add Herring to the 40 man to make him spend more time in Columbus. Our LHR's will be Hentges and Herrin and I'm fine with that for now. Both can log multiple innings which is important with the 3 batter rule. The idea of a strictly loogy RP is kind of old is it not?

It's not Herrin's spot... It's his spot to earn... It doesn't matter what you do in the minors, he still has to earn it in spring. They just believe he will is all...

And I'm not sure how it is hard to understand that they need to readjust their valuations and the 8th spot is Herrin's to lose. He may very well do that too, but as of now he has to be the other LHRP. There are no other options and his performance/talent and age pretty much dictate the opportunity. So yeah, it Herrin's spot until it isn't. You can reply with whatever condescending, smartass reply you want, but I'm done with the Herrin conversation.

February 17th can't come soon enough ... 24 days and counting .... think some people need to let off a little something or smoke a little something to calm the nerves ... a bit more than just a hug....

So it's late January.
And there's still some interesting unemployed players out there. Does anybody think we should kick the tires on any of these guys? STI?
  • Brad Hand - veteran LHRP
  • Jurickson Profar - versatile guy with a 3.1 WAR last year.
  • Gary Sanchez - until they bring up Bo Naylor.
  • Roberto Perez - Ditto
  • Michael Fulmer - RHRP
  • Jackie Bradley Jr. - Done at 32?
  • Bryan Shaw - you know him

I'm fairly confident Shaw hasn't left the clubhouse. He doordashes Slyman's there for lunch every day and is playing virtual cribbage on his phone.

He has everything he needs to hibernate for the winter and wait out Spring Training, being plump and ready to go when Cleveland needs him.

  • And would be a nice addition to the bullpen in my opinion. Or at least a non roster invite.
  • The team already has him on the roster, he just goes by the name of Ahmed Rosario.
  • Pass.
  • If he's still out there, I think they would be interested on some level.
  • Not sure
  • No, his value was defense and the team already has a centerfielder who can defend but can't hit
  • Neither the signing we need nor the signing we deserve, just the signing we are going to get

can he?. probably.. maybe.. not at all.. one of those three.. What I've seen is a guy who doesn't have elite velo (not a crime/deterrent).. that relies on pitch sequencing to induce poor contact, with the vast majority of balls put in play on the ground.. This eschews the most obvious way a top of the pen reliever gets outs: K's.. Putting a ball in play can be a good thing for a hitter.. As the hitters at the ML level are thee most elite.. that can result in more hits and runs.. and certainly can limit effectiveness.

Until he does show he can get guys out.. relying on his "stuff" without being able to pile up the K's.. says.. he has a lot to prove.. again. Can he?. probably.. maybe.. not at all... We'll see..

Are you sure you're not thinking of Misiascek? I only ask because Herrin has an upper 90's FB(frequently hitting 99). He doesn't rely on pitch sequencing any more than any other pitcher. He's a power LHRP with a a good FB, slider and cutter.

From Tito. “He looks like Andrew Miller, throws like Andrew Miller,” Francona said. “We saw him this spring, I remember he came in a game, Brian Sweeney called down and said ‘Wait till you see this." and that was last year. Since then his FB had another uptick or 3.

From Fangraphs. "Tim Herrin’s fastball also picked up three notches this year, and he trampolined off a strong 2021 into a dominant ’22 as a multi-inning reliever, at times working two to three innings. His fastball’s angle makes it tough to get on top of, and Herrin mixes in a nasty slider and cutter that give him the repertoire depth to work all the way through a lineup."

None of this means he's a surefire/can't miss prospect, but he's not what you're trying to describe him as. What you are describing is Misiascek, not Herrin. That's why I asked. I would invite you to watch the interview the guys on Locked On Guardians podcast had with Tim. He described why there was a jump in his velocity and how his cutter is becoming his best set up pitch. Justin and Jeff do a pretty stand up job in these podcasts. I enjoy them anyway.
