23 Offseason GM Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So it's late January.
And there's still some interesting unemployed players out there. Does anybody think we should kick the tires on any of these guys? STI?
  • Brad Hand - veteran LHRP
  • Jurickson Profar - versatile guy with a 3.1 WAR last year.
  • Gary Sanchez - until they bring up Bo Naylor.
  • Roberto Perez - Ditto
  • Michael Fulmer - RHRP
  • Jackie Bradley Jr. - Done at 32?
  • Bryan Shaw - you know him
I'm not interested in any of those guys honestly. Outside of Profar, they just don't bring enough to the table and we already have Rosario who makes Profar a wash.

Profar hasn't been capable in the field for 5 years.
He draws some walks and hits a handful of dingers. Not an awful lot, though.

First idea is this...

Cleveland gets
LHP Lucas Gilbreath

Rockies get
2B/LF Palacios
MIF Tena
SP Mace...

This would add a controllable arm to the bullpen...

Then we sign a guy like Solano (@petes999 suggestion) as the bench guy....

It doesn't have to be Gilbreath... I just would like to find a way to move Palacios and Tena for a solid pitching talent with at least some MLB experience. Then add a Solano and/or a veteran utility player to take the final bench role. If Rosario is kept, it's impossible to get Arias and Freeman innings.

And other near or at MLB ready arms, you think we could get for Palacios and/or Tena?

Second idea...

Cleveland gets
LHRP Nardi
Util Wendle
Cash or PTBNL

Marlins get
2B/LF Palacios
MIF Tena

This serves the same purpose as the first one... @Tondo what do you think of Nardi? Any lower prospect/sleeper that you would like as a PTBNL?

Haven't looked into the prospects/players, but I wouldn't sell Tena or Palacios low now.

The MIF I'd look to trade are: Rosario, Arias and Genao

imho.. Tena is going to end up as a limited ability player who might improve enough to carve out a major league career getting to play in fits and starts with a second division club.. IDK why Palacios gets as much love as he does on this site... but.. after looking at his Magellan-like routes to fly balls defensively.. every at bat I've seen from Palacios looks like he's out of control, out of balance & soon to be out of chances.. Count me in the group that believes his best chance at being an ML'er are as a coach. IOW.. trading him soon wouldn't hurt my feelings..

Also.. if the intent is to improve the Guardians in a meaningful way & the wrong and stupid notion that any deal MUST have contribution in the 2023 season.. then this isn't it... imho.. Adding Galbreath, a "nothing special" LHRP, and a well worn journeyman infielder in Wendle just doesn't move the needle...

Better choices are out there.. probably why nothing has happened as CleFO doesn't want to settle for "this"... FWIW, any deal with the Marlins needs to start with someone like Edward Cabrera for "near ready now" talent.. Guys like Eder and Mack would have a chance to truly improve the club long term.... The return certainly won't be at the Tena/Palacios level.. starting with Bibee might make the needle move..

So a 2+ WAR player for a guy who played majority of his career with one team is a tired journey man?

yes.. he's a wasted roster spot filled by TEN other guys at a tenth of his salary..

NO ON WENDLE..

I don't know if Gilbreath or Nardi are even needs at this time. Should Herrin or Hentges falter then either might be a good add, but I doubt they move to trade for a LHRP until they know how the 2 LHRP's they have now are going to perform.

I have no interest in Wendle at all. You don't block guys like Arias and Rocchio with a Wendle type.

Wendle isn't blocking anyone... He's there to take the last bench spot and be an utility guy getting 200-300 ABs and/or covering for injuries...

I'm also hoping to get Nardi, Wendle and another prospec (or the Marlins pay part of the Wendle contract) It would give us at least two 40 FV prospects and Wendle to fill the veteran role at the end of the bench that Francona likes to have.

Nardi on paper... Looks like a solid reliever from all his minor league numbers. Mid 90s fastball with a plus slider and an occasional changeup... If he can get that changeup to be a plus, he will be a plus Reliever since righties would struggle with the changeup more than lefties. He would have Morgan around to watch/possibly learn a changeup from...

Wendle would be an obstacle for the younger guys..

Isn't it time for the perfunctory comment about not happening anyway?.. or you were joking?

We are bringing in a veteran/journeymen utility man who likely gets the last bench spot... When haven't we done that in the last ten years... I'd rather have a Wendle since he knows how to play a bunch of positions at a solid clip and he fits the style of our team. Plus you can trust him to get a hit and/or on base...

Gilbreath is definitely intriguing but I don't know if I would give up 3 pieces for -- as you can get a Loogy cheap at the trade deadline if we are in it. If you look at Gilbreath brief career MLB numbers, they are about even (lefties hit him a bit better on OPS - maybe because he was brought in as a loogy vs best lefties at times). And, his 2022 minor numbers show loogy potential. But, 2021 minor numbers were reversed splits -- so mixed results. Is he just learning a pitch to lefties in minors (but hanging it in MLB) that shows promise? Something to investigate.

However, over all, I don't see us trading for a 8th man reliever or 13th man bench player (like Wendle) as the price is out-weighed by the number of appearances/at-bats they will get. You don't pay Wendle $6 million to sit and play the Clement role unless you are the Yankees. I rather see what Herrin, Miso and Cantillo can do in relief role before I spend our assets - because in particular Cantillo can be just as good and it's a good way to get his feet wet late in season (to do LOOGY for playoffs).

But, you have to look at how Tito manages the pen and 8th man. McCarty was not a great example as a Loogy, but he was the 8th pitcher on roster for playoffs and got in how many times? NONE and he is no longer on the team. Hentges (better LOOGY) was brought in 3 times in 7 games for playoffs but not in a high pressured LOOGY role. He got into extras vs Tampa (not early to shut things down). He went in for 3rd game vs NY after McK got us down 4-2 w 2 run HR to Cabrera... but not to face Judge later that inning (to keep it close) but to give length in next inning for Rizzo, Stanton and Donaldson. He also came in the 5th game not as a Loogy but to save Civale with the bottom of their lineup (and give length again) with Cabrerra, Bader and Trevino. Tito trusts his righties to get guys out regardless - reason Oliver Perez has not really been replaced in 2022 or this year yet.

when, we're in it..

Example of a guy that could be considered: Ray Kerr..

He's an older LHP/LHRP (late 20's) with the two plus pitches: FB/SL out of the same tunnel.. throws strikes with these two offerings & struggles to control other pitches.. This is a profile the Guardians typically look for in a "Loogy" pickup.. He has the kind of weapon and K rate that says: High Leverage RP.. in his case.. LHRP..

That said.. he'd be put to the task to beat out guys like Allen/Cantillo if they were given the chance to break into the ML's as relievers....

There are others..
