#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can a wise soul please do a compare and contrast of Peppers to everyone's not-so-secret crush, Obi Melifonwu? Obi is a lot taller, but I've read that they basically would have had similar roles on the Browns. Both are not over the top safetys, but in the box guys who are downhill tacklers. So why is Peppers so polarizing while Melifonwu was nearly universally desired? Is it just height? Do not mention the school Peppers went to because that does not concern me.

What I read about Peppers reminds me of a guy from last year's class, Jeremy Cash. Analytics loved Cash, but he was not the athlete Peppers is and ended up going undrafted. He since converted to "linebacker" as an UDFA for Carolina.

I'll call it right now. Significant day one contributor on both defense and special teams.

Definitely some boom or bust elements in terms of what Peppers will contribute defensively. He should be a special teams monster in both the return game and the kick coverage game right away if nothing else. Maybe there's even a couple of plays a game where he touches the ball on offense.

But at the end of the day, this pick's ultimate value comes down to how Gregg Williams decides to use Peppers defensively. It seems really stupidly obvious, but if he's asked to do things he's not particularly good at, he'll struggle.

If the Browns use him more as an in-the-box strong safety/nickel corner that can also run fit -- that would seem to be the best use of his skills.

The one thing I am confident in is that Peppers isn't going to dog it out there. Unlike a Justin Gilbert who looked like Tarzan and played like Jane, Peppers is a guy who seems to love football and will bust his ass at all times.

Because it sounds like Gregg Williams really wanted this guy and knows exactly how to use him, I feel pretty good about the pick.

I don't think Peppers would be able to be a universally great pick on any team (like Garrett) but I believe he fits here.

He seems genuinely excited to be here though, which is a great start.

I love this guy's enthusiasm. Seems to genuinely love the game and the opportunity.

Not really concerned with his lack of a set position at Michigan. If this kid is a football player, if he's got the football IQ and the work ethic, he'll succeed. He certainly has the athletic ability.

Love Peppers... This is the type of guy a quality team plugs in and he just makes plays... Now the Browns aren't a quality team so maybe they need more from someone selected in the first round ?? but I'm certainly confident Gregg Williams can make him an effective contributor to an improving defense....

His combine video was impressive. Browns must have really liked him. Getting another 1st to essentially pick him is going to look quite nice I think.

Clear agenda to make this defense FAST.

We're going to be flying to the ball.

Obi is bigger and might be even more athletic. He has a better nose for the ball, but played a level down and played a more traditional role of Safety.

Peppers is shorter, but much better tackler. Has great in the box instincts, but lacks the close out instincts you would ideally want to see from a true Safety. He is probably more ideal for the rover than even Obi, but I liked Obi's ability to play safety if Williams somehow goes away.

That all being said, I have such a man crush on Obi and we have such a need in the secondary i would still draft Obi if he falls.

If Peppers ends up as good as Blaine Bishop was, we will all be doing back flips.

That's now two comments (one from Hue and now one from Breer) that indicate the plan is to play Peppers at strong safety.
