Dusty Rhodes was simply fantastic. Well past his prime by the time he came to the WWF.

But he was always entertaining.

For a tub he was surprisingly agile and athletic. Always enjoyed his matches as a kid even if I wasn't a "fan".

Was there ever a Dusty/Honky Tonk fued? There should've been.

Dusty had a match with HTM at SummerSlam 1989!

He beat the Hacky Tank Man.

I can't find free video of it, but Bruce Prichard talks about it on his podcast.

A classic Rick Rude match.

And Beefcake was even good.

Hilarious. @RchfldCavRaised

Just watched this Bam Bam Bigelow episode of Dark Side of the Ring and it broke my heart.

I need to check out some Golden Era guys who's story either ended better or is still ongoing, and Beefcake, Hacksaw and Foley were the three names that popped up. This seals the deal for looking into Beefcake

He had a monstrous impact on the sport. You could look at him and think "fat tub of goo", but nobody sold the sport like Dusty, and did a lot to build up promotions. He owned the charismatic everyman vibe like nobody before or since. And he was king of the bleeders.

Yeah he was a giant of the sport in the late 70s into the 80s.

Tub of goo? Yes. But his charisma was off the charts.

It was crazy, because in 1989, I like other younglings of the time, did not have any real inkling of wrestling outside of the cartoony WWF since 1985. I had heard of Dusty Rhodes, but was not familiar with his work.

And then he put out the working man vignettes. And then he was just amazing in the ring; it looked sooooo out of place with his mannerisms and way of talking. He looked silly in them polka dots, strutting around with his huge ass, but he was just so cool and fun. He was so charismatic and full of energy.

In the ring and as a booker behind some of the best NWA angles in the 80s.

Legendary feuds with Flair.

Perhaps the greatest promo ever:

No perhaps about it. I get chills looking at. Thanks for posting.

Some great Dusty quotes, delivered in that unique style:

The man of the hour, the man with the power. I am the hit-maker, the record-breaker. I got style and grace, a pretty face. I’ll make your back crack, your liver quiver. If you ain’t into this match, you’re at the wrong address. Superstar, when the other wrestlers are smilin’ and jokin, The Dream be, WOO!, cookin’ and smokin’.”

I have wined and dined with kings and queens and I’ve slept in alleys and dined on pork and beans.”

I have supped mead with lords and ladies; so to have I slumbered in nameless lanes and gorged upon mutton.”

"You can beat mah prices, but you can’t beat mah meat."

The man's mic work was off the charts.

I met Hacksaw a few years ago at a St. Cloud Rox (Northwoods Baseball League) game meet and greet event. He was super kind and seemed to be having a great time. Ended up talking with him for 15+ minutes, possibly the best 5 dollars I ever spent. Pretty sure he is doing great these days.
