Artest on the block

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I doubt Indiana are seriously considering the Miami option. They will listen to all, but shutin one ear and out the other with most East offers.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Ron Artest doesn't want to be traded by the Indiana Pacers after all, his agent says.

Artest said last weekend that his past in Indiana haunts him, and he is interested in being traded to the New York Knicks or Cleveland Cavaliers.

But Mark Stevens, Artest's agent, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Artest holds out hope he can remain a Pacer.

"At this moment, we're not going to put the buggy before the horse," Stevens said. "We're waiting to hear from (Pacers president) Donnie Walsh, the gentleman and scholar that he is, and hope this can be resolved to where there won't have to be a trade."

Artest triggered a brawl with Detroit Pistons fans in November 2004 and was suspended for 73 games and the playoffs. Walsh said the latest incident was "the last straw of a lot of issues."

Stevens said Walsh told him he is prepared to make Artest inactive with pay for the rest of the season if he can't find a suitable trade.

"I understand the frustration as a general manager, dealing with the past incidents with Ron, and I can understand if he sees fit to do that," Stevens said.

The NBA fined Artest $10,000 Thursday for making public statements detrimental to the NBA.

Artest was a key component on a team expected to challenge for the Eastern Conference crown. He leads the league in steals and is the Pacers' second-leading scorer at 19.4 points a game.

Artest For Peja Almost Done

24th January, 2006 - 11:01 am

NY Post - Peter Vecsey has it on excellent authority the Pacers and Kings are exceedingly close to swapping Ron Artest (three more years after this on his contract with a right to opt out after two) for Peja Stojakovic, who has the freedom to opt out after this season or play out the next.

Then again, let me put it another way: The two teams are as close as the Clippers were to acquiring Artest for Corey Maggette before an Indiana doctor decided the swingman's left ankle was too great a risk.

According to three sources, it's strictly Sacramento's call; the Pacers are agreeable and ready to deal, and are waiting for the Kings to make up their mind.

Bird: 'We're closer than we were

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers are closer to dealing Ron Artest and getting a player to help their struggling team.

"We're closer than we were," Indiana president of basketball operations Larry Bird said Tuesday. "To say we're going to do something today, well, that's not going to happen."

Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, said "a deal is imminent, almost as soon as possible."

A deal with Sacramento is potentially on the horizon, according to the New York Post, which is reporting that Peja Stojakovic could be dealt for Artest.

Artest was a key component to a team that was expected to challenge for the Eastern Conference crown. He led the league in steals and was the Pacers' second-leading scorer at 19.4 points a game before being deactivated after publicly requesting a trade in early December.

In five years with the Pacers, Artest was an All-Star once and was the NBA's defensive player of the year in 2003-04.

Bird said the Pacers had been interested in Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers, but there was "no question" that Maggette's sprained left foot affected the process. Maggette averaged 21.7 points in 13 games before getting injured in early December.

The Timberwolves were among many teams that have inquired about Artest and were thought to be a prime candidate to be involved in a trade. But talks between Timberwolves vice president Kevin McHale and Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh have slowed of late.

Jermaine O'Neal, the Pacers' leading scorer, has said some players might be worried about getting traded along with Artest, and it might be affecting their play. The Pacers have lost four of their last five games, including Monday to the Atlanta Hawks, who have the NBA's worst record.

Bird dismissed that idea, saying there's always a chance a player can be traded.

"I don't believe that," Bird said. "How can they be affected? It's the same thing every year."

Bird said his players should not worry because he's trying for a one-for-one deal. He said the Pacers' recent tailspin has not pushed him to make a deal more quickly.

"We want to do what's right for this franchise."

I wouldnt do this if I was the Kings. You get Pejas contract off the books this year to get some cap relief and who knows what you are getting with Artest.

The Kings are too far away to make this trade work in the long run.

ITS OFFICIAL. ARTEST FOR PEJA. Just saw it on NBATV.

While true, the kings wanted something in return since peja was gonna bolt so I don't think its a bad trade at all for them.

I think it's worth the risk for the Kings. They are a soft team and a player like Artest is just what they need. Of course you have to worry if he'll keep his head screwed on right. If it doesn't work out than the Kings could move him again. They would be able to deal him to an eastern conference team which Indiana wasn't going to do so that opens up other options.

I think the Kings decided that Peja wasn't coming back and they didn't want to give him a big contract. His game has slipped this year but maybe a change of scenary will help him out.
Indiana does get a quality player back who has a history of success. It' a risk for them because they could lose Peja as a FA this summer and have nothing to show for trading Artest. The Bulls will have lots of cap space and Peja has said he likes Chicago.

This makes the Pacers great (if that is possible). I love Peja's game - he was the one guy I didn't want them to get. Hopefully he bolts after this season.

deal is off which is nice.......BUT here is the question....Do we take a run at him???? Drew and Luke works and Artest came out he said he would love to play in Cleveland......would love to have hughes artest and lebron all playing at the 1 2 3 but this is artest we are talking about

The only way Artest comes to Cleveland if Hughes or Lebron goes to the Pacers.

Fair? No, but the Pacers arent dealing him within the conference, let alone the Central.

I thought Artest to the Cavs was a decent idea before. I wouldn't want him now. This guy is a nutcase just waiting to blow up. It's only a matter of time before another incident comes up and he hurts your team. This is the 3rd time his actions have severely hurt the Pacers.
Artest is a quality player who plays hard but when you acquire him you also bring in the likely chance that he'll do something at some point to destroy your team. I don't want that on my team.
