Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This dude was a GUNSLINGER, pure and through. Now he's timid and afraid to throw the ball. He does not make multiple reads - so the coach is limited in what they can do to beat the looks they're getting. He doesn't seem to be healthy enough to zip the ball into spots and hesitates on attempting those throws. This is what a QB who can't anticipate leverage has to rely on to be successful.

Defenses crash down against the run, play tight coverage against an offense with a bunch of tight ends who can't get separation, and dare Baker to beat them. If a window isn't wide open, he isn't attempting it. Tack on the fact that the tackles get beat every now and then and Baker is panicking even when he has time, and we see why the offense is a disaster.

Stefanski's tendencies are a bit worrying but I imagine they're just blips on the radar if our QB could go down the field. I mean... can we get one drive where he goes down the field without having the open guy manufactured for him on the first read? Just one drive?

We've invested an ENTIRE new offensive coaching staff around him. AVP was supposed to fix his issues. But he's still timid in the pocket. Just too many flaws with this dude.

Like imagine Baker is fully healthy right now. What does that get us? Better overall QB play? Maybe.

But he's still a guy that can't make multiple reads, or throw with anticipation, or maneuver well in the pocket, or see over the line, or read coverages well. Defenses are painting Stefanski into a corner, and the only way out the corner is to spread those defenses out and make them pay downfield. But QB1 can't do that. I honestly feel defenses have just caught up to him.

I guess we'll see how things shake out after the bye and get our hopes up that Baker will be "magically" better, but I'm not counting on it.

The only question I have at this point...

If the Browns are unable to trade for one of the higher end veteran QBs - are they willing to go with a rookie QB or one of the veteran free agents over Baker Mayfield in 2022?

I'm just not sure what the answer is to that. A month ago I'd have said no, but a divorce seems increasingly likely.

The next Ravens game should be interesting if only to see how each team adjusts when they've already seen all the cards played out.

if in a must win game this is what we get

who cares

Because my dog's niece could have completed that screen pass

Jimmy G will be available this off-season

Whatever side of the Baker spectrum you sit on, you have to notice he just doesn't have the juice right now (and I'm not talking about Jarvis). I haven't seen guys look to play their hardest for him...I haven't seen guys go check in on him...I haven't seen any camaraderie or enjoyment being around him. I hear dudes respecting the QB position and saying the right things about toughness and gutting it out. I haven't seen any of the players seemingly caring about *Baker*, though.

Has anyone else noticed it? It looks so different with other teams; even other QBs playing poorly. Not with Baker, though...

Logic tells me that going with a rookie QB could very well set us back for awhile and open the door again to the terrible QB carousel.

But I'm getting close to just saying fuck it. Throw all logic to the wind. Flip the bird to the universe, and roll that damn dice. Trot that rookie out and if he's trash in one of the most QB friendly offenses ever, roll the dice again the following year. You got one year to show us some promise/potential.

No chance in hell. Literally anything, including continuing to play Baker, would be better than playing a rookie QB. That would set us back *at least* an additional 3 years, when the defense and o-line are set up to win right now.

That is just patently false though.

Baker hobbling around, double clutching on every play, paying more attention to the pass rushers than his receivers, etc. He is so clearly frazzled.
That is not better than Case Keenum.

Would Case have caught the repeated dropped passes for the WRs? Otherwise the result would've been the same.

In general I agree

But I genuinely believe you could put ANY QB in the NFL other than Baker in tonight for the Browns and 98% of them win that game

so like recency bias has me really ready to say fuck Baker

I get that logic. I've been saying the same thing all year. But I'm just fed up.

Gun to my head I'm probably rolling out a healthy Baker next year (assuming we can't upgrade through trade) over a rookie but damn is it frustrating to be tied down another year.

He would have completed the screen pass to Hunt that would have been an easy TD for any non braindead QB

Is this really true though? What pass-catcher scares an oopposing defense?
