Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not necessarily.

I'm just not sure an extension makes sense for either side right now. For Baker, he's going to want to come back healthy and prove he's worth big $ that surely isn't on the table right now. For the Browns, they have no incentive to commit to any kind of extension right now, even if they do still believe he can be "the guy" once 100% again. If he balls out next year, they can franchise tag him or work out a deal then. If he doesn't, they can move on knowing it wasn't just injuries.

If Baker’s camp thinks he’s getting a large contract from anyone besides us, they are doing him a huge disservice.

What’s in Baker’s best interest is trying to buy him until age 29/30 with as much opportunity as possible. Being a FA QB at that point, stringing two good seasons together, would do him wonders in comparison.

Right now, it’s the difference from getting another starter contract and becoming a journeyman.

Every team that doesn't have Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, or Russell Wilson would love to dream about an upgrade. I'm sure Berry would line up as fast as the next GM. But pipe dreams are pipe dreams.
It's not that hard to find a QB that can complete a 10 yard pass when guys are open.

Right now? Of course not. If he has a good year next year, even similar to 2020? He'll get paid. This is a QB-needy league as a whole - as much hate as Baker has had here in 2021 there's a bunch of teams who would love to have him starting for them in 2022 instead of their current options.

...I mean, that's exactly my point.

Sure, it'll leave the door open, but the Browns certainly going to avoid a QB upgrade when they aren't all that sure Baker is there guy going forward. If they were, they would negotiate with him anyway, ala the Cowboys with Dak last year.

My point is it doesn't mean they dpnt think he can be the guy, they just might want him to come back healthy and prove it.

Hahahahahaha

Are you new to this?

I've been around since 1990.

So I understood since 1999.

And if it's so easy, it wouldn't have been a 1999-2018 occurring problem.
All of that is just utter nonsense.

The Browns were a uniquely inept franchise during that time. Most NFL teams found multiple starters during those years, the Browns were just historically inept at GM and HC.

That's not the case anymore.

It stands to reason if the Browns thought 2021 was nothing more than a fluke based entirely on injuries that they'd be willing to discuss a contract extension, right?

They're not talking extension because ultimately they want to see better play out of their QB spot what they got in 2020 to commit to a long-term deal.

you understand it takes 2 sides to negotiate right?

Its unlikely that either side wants to talk extension for various reasons. Baker has always bet on himself and its always paid off. Right now he is worth probably a bottom line starting QB contract of 22-25 and he wants to prove that he is worth more than that. The browns want to maintain their options for as long as possible. So yeah its a smart decision for the browns not to engage because unless they are going to throw 35/year at Baker (they arent) its just going to piss everyone off.

So everyone agrees lets hold off and see what happens next year.

I believe it means they know he had a miserable season and that they want to see what he can do with full health and (hopefully) some added weapons in 2022.

Baker has every reason to have the best year of his career next year.

If he does, the Browns hold all the cards and can franchise him accordingly or work towards a long term deal.

About a 90% chance Mayfield will be the starter for the Browns next season. Add a wide recever in the first round and then watch the 2020 Baker return.

Do you think a new receiver will help Mayfield see receivers when they’re open? Because the receivers get open now and he doesn’t really see them and if he does indeed see them he doesn’t like…throw to them with consistency

Since it looks like we're going to be stuck with him one can only hope that Baker watches the tapes of his suckitude Clockwork Orange style with clamps on his eyelids, electrodes on his nipples and balls delivering a taser shock, until it gets burned into his psyche that he needs to get the fucking ball out on time and on target. He should have to go to the back of the huddle and puke every time he pats the ball or fails to see an open receiver.
