Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You can work your ass off at something and not improve much, improve at a slower rate than others, or have rate of improvement impacted by other factors (Ex: Significant injuries).

You have no idea how hard either guy works.
See Baker films commercials so he is obviously very lazy and doesnt care about football.

Allen doesnt film as many commercials so he is obviously working on football all year long.

Or to add to your point. One of these guys has had the same head coach for all 4 years. One of these guys has had 3 head coaches in 4 years. That seems to slow development if what you are working towards keeps changing

Let's not blame the injury on Baker's performance. In his four years in the NFL, here's his QB ratings:

2018- 93.7
2019- 78.8
2020- 95.9
2021- 83.1
average- 87.875

By comparison, here's Jameis Winston's ratings from his first 4 seasons in Tampa Bay:

2015- 84.2
2016- 86.1
2017- 92.2
2018- 90.2
average- 88.175

Here's Marcus Mariota's ratings from his first 4 seasons in Tennessee:

2015- 91.5
2016- 95.6
2017- 79.3
2018- 92.3
average- 89.675

Here's Ryan Tannehill's ratings from his first 4 seasons in Miami:

2012- 76.1
2013- 81.7
2014- 92.8
2015- 88.7
average- 84.825

All, except for Tannehill, have had higher average QB ratings in their first 4 seasons than Baker Mayfield and each has since moved on to a new team. Make all the excuses you want, but it's pretty obvious the company Baker is in and that he just isn't very good. Quite simply, some people see what they want to see in Baker...

Things that jump out to me are 1. His best season rating is better than any of the other three guys' best season, and 2. His second best season is better than two of the others' best season. Suggests to me the same thing my eyes tell me: when Mayfield is good he's good enough. The problem is inconsistency. You never know what you're going to get.

Go back and watch the 2018 Senior Bowl when both played. The difference is obvious. Allen’s arm is elite. Baker’s is good. Allen throws effortlessly while Baker has to put everything into his throws to get anywhere close to the same velocity.

Ball velocity combine numbers:

Mayfield - 60 MPH
Allen - 62 MPH

This whole debate of who works harder is so stupid. Hard work doesn't always result in good QB play. Josh Allen did improve his accuracy and deserves credit, but he also came with an elite arm which is something 95% of quarterback prospects don't have. You've got guys like Tyrod Taylor that almost everyone would agree works his tail off, but that doesn't always result in better passing on Sunday. Brian Hoyer is another example - widely regarded as a hard worker but was never going to be much more than average due to his lack of arm talent.

Baker Mayfield literally showed up to training camp out of shape after his rookie season. He was visibly fat by his standards.

I think it's fair to assume that Josh Allen works harder than Baker Mayfield because we've seen how serious that both players take their craft. Josh Allen takes his craft more seriously than Baker. Baker showed up out of shape in his second year. Why do so many people memory hole this? It happened.

You do realize that rating and QBR are different, right? Tom Brady averaged a 100.0 for his first four years in the NFL.

We should have handled Mayfield this season completely different. Maybe even put Mayfield on IR for awhile so he could at least get some rehab done and had a chance to be way healthier down the stretch...

I actually feel like Mayfield will be better than 2020 Mayfield in 22... Now will he ever be a top ten QB? That's hard to say at the end of the day, but are we going to find anyone better right now without hurting out trade assets and/or cap space? Honestly I think that's a no!

For better or for Worse, Mayfield is our best option in 22 and hopefully both Mayfield and Stef grew from this season and they prove it in 22... Browns will likely have a deal on the table sometime in 22 if Mayfield is playing well. Though I hope we don't have to overpay for him

Baker Mayfield’s trajectory is definitely Tom Brady
I mean why not. People sure love cherry picking stats vs Jameis :chuckle:
