Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We should have handled Mayfield this season completely different. Maybe even put Mayfield on IR for awhile so he could at least get some rehab done and had a chance to be way healthier down the stretch...

I actually feel like Mayfield will be better than 2020 Mayfield in 22... Now will he ever be a top ten QB? That's hard to say at the end of the day, but are we going to find anyone better right now without hurting out trade assets and/or cap space? Honestly I think that's a no!

For better or for Worse, Mayfield is our best option in 22 and hopefully both Mayfield and Stef grew from this season and they prove it in 22... Browns will likely have a deal on the table sometime in 22 if Mayfield is playing well. Though I hope we don't have to overpay for him
I'd say he was ~arguably~ top 10 in 2020. His numbers are in that 9-14ish range. His efficiency (rating) was average, but some (including myself) view effectiveness > efficiency. 1/2 for 30 yards is 50% completion but it's far superior than 2/2 for 10 yards and 100% completion. Efficiency does not sum up how effective a QB can be. Efficiency and volume are his "low" points in 2020 (with "low" being around average), whereas he was pretty dominant in big-play stats. This is for the entirety of 2020 and not sampling out that ~10 game stretch where it felt like he had improved.

So if he matches 2020 Mayfield I'd be pretty damn happy. We had a bottom 3rd defense, whereas our defense in 2021 was muuuch improved. 2020 level Mayfield + our improved defense is good enough to get us the big one, IMO. Problem is - will 2022 Mayfield be even close to 2020? I'm almost certain he'll be better than 2021, but I have my doubts about him reaching 2020 level again. We'll see.

i'm pretty sure i just googled "tom brady QBR stats" and no, i have no idea what i am doing
No worries. I don't either most of the time. Pro Football Reference is a great site for stats. They have all sorts of basic stats & advanced stats, many of which I can't make heads or tails of either.

You don't pay attention to baseball enough then since it has stats for just about everything. There is likely someone out their doing stats on what size cup guys wear @Lee I am sure started that one lol

Honestly thought I think overall Mayfield will be fine in 22 as long as he works his mechanics back to what they should be since they definitely got messed up when he got hurt...

I am more about taste and texture than size.

Baker Mayfield literally showed up to training camp out of shape after his rookie season. He was visibly fat by his standards.

I think it's fair to assume that Josh Allen works harder than Baker Mayfield because we've seen how serious that both players take their craft. Josh Allen takes his craft more seriously than Baker. Baker showed up out of shape in his second year. Why do so many people memory hole this? It happened.

From a 2021 preseason article by Jake Trotter:

"After a drastic recommitment to eating smarter and exercising harder, Mayfield is in the best shape of his career. He’s reduced his body fat from 18 to 11%. He lost 14 pounds despite adding 4 pounds of muscle, and now weighs 214, which is lighter than what his listed weight was at Oklahoma. He can do almost twice as many pushups in one stint as before (45 from 25). And he’s hit new personal highs in everything from squats to the vertical jump."

And then he had his worst season. So much for that correlation.

By the way, Josh Allen didn't come into the league in great shape. He's worked to build his body up too, which is common with young athletes.

We can question Baker's ability but any takes about his work ethic are lazy IMO.

There’s no question Baker’s pORK% is better and his tENdER% is much better than Brady’s.. Pretty even in their loIN% through the first 4 seasons however….

Yep. Baker himself admitted to being out of shape and not working hard that offseason. He thought it was going to be "easy" so he didn't put in the work. Straight from the horses mouth.

In what is the most important offseason for any young QB, Baker didn't put in the work. Period. Let's not try to change history here.

Exactly. That's all I was saying. Plus on top of being out of shape he spent a lot of time during that offseason talking big shit about Cowheard, Rex Ryan, and Hue Jackson. His mentality was not where we needed it it be entering that season.

But that's my point. Baker and Josh Allen came into the league the same season. One guy worked his ass off to improve and has done so every season they've been in the league. The other guy admitted that he was out of shape and didn't take things serious enough. He admitted this himself so why is it lazy for me to question his work ethic?

Are we also going to forget how Baker snapped back at MCK when she asked him what he needed to improve in the offseason and if he needed to get some help from outside? He got real offended and said something along the lines of he does need any advice or help from anyone.

These are things that Baker has done and said. We're not putting words in his mouth or making shit up. In his 4 full seasons here we've watched Baker openly criticize two of his Head Coaches, go at teammates and question their commitment (Duke Johnson) while he himself was not committed enough to be in shape, get in various fights with people in the media (Cowheard, Rex Ryan, MCK, Grossi), and straight up attack the fans on more than one occasion.

People seem to be forgetting that during the one offseason (can’t remember which) Baker was caught on camera frying ants with a magnifying glass and dissecting worms outside of his house and laughing about it.

Not to mention that he’s a Holocaust denier.

Are we comfortable with this kind of churlish behavior?

I was, personally, not aware of this.

The Holocaust denial i can live with, but dissecting worms and frying ants is just egregious.

Trade him and sign Cam Newton and Colon Keapernick.

I'm just laughing at how quickly the script has been flipped. I know earlier in the season there were quite a few of us that suggested that Baker shut it down and get surgery as soon as we found out he had a torn labrum.

I predicted exactly how this would play out. I said that if he doesn't shut it down and he goes out there and stinks it up (he did) that all we would hear at the end of the season was injury excuses and that's not acceptable.

The entire season Baker wanted it both ways. He wanted to get credit for playing hurt and he also wanted a pass in case he sucked while playing hurt. The same people getting defensive about his play after the season has ended were the same ones arguing against shutting him down. I suggested that we either start Case Keenum or trade for another backup like Cam or Nick Foles and just ride out this season.

Had Baker shut it down after he tore his labrum he would've rode into this offseason with a lot more goodwill and there wouldn't be this many questions about his status as the starter for next season. I don't think too many people would be opposed to riding with him as the starter next season if he had shut it down earlier. he would be in better standing with the fan base too.

But nope. Baker wanted it all and once things got worse and he got more injured his lack of leadership started to show. leaking shit to Jay Glazer, the OBJ situation spiraling the way it did and dividing the locker room, and attacking the fans and the media.

So much of this could've been avoided had Baker just shut it down and got the surgery earlier in the season. there was not a single positive in the end for Baker continuing to play through it. Not one. If anything things only got worse from his perspective.

But it's crazy to me watching people try to double back and rewrite history.

You say Holocaust denier, I say truth seeker.
