Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wow that is some dark beer. Do you guys drink those while sitting around or is that more of a dinner/food thing?

.. I should probably try Guinness since that's the most popular. Also still have to try Yuengling.

Guinness is really an acquired taste. I found years ago that if I drank nothing but Guinness, I wouldn't have much of a hangover the next day. And it gives you a smooth and easy buzz and a happy drunk. At least, that's what it does to me. And once you get used to the taste, you will crave it. I was always intriqued by the concept of "the perfect pint". I don't know if Guinness still issues these certificates or not, but 15 years ago they actually sent reps from bar to bar testing the bartenders to make sure they were serving it the right way. When you get a properly poured one, it is creamy and cool with a coffee aftertaste. Just delicious. Now that I am a little older and can't drink as much, two (20 oz) pints of Guinness and I'm flying like a kite. Truly the nectar of the Gods. It deserves its own category.

Most dark or strong beer is generally better when you're eating, but it also depends on the person. I usually don't eat when I'm drinking (especially Guinness), but when I do it's usually stuff like nuts (go ahead... make the jokes -_-) or salty snacks.

And as mentioned, it really is an acquired taste.

i have read they still send out reps to do that. though i havent checked with any of my local bars.

I will say though I am a HUGE fan of dark beer and absolutely love guinness, which is interesting because the first time I tried it I hated it. It really is totally different than a lot of beers. the first one you have it feels like you are tryign to drink a loaf of bread. but by the 2nd or 3rd one its basically like water. Though by that point if im still drinking I have usually switched to liquor.

To me dark beers in general are just fantastic. Sam Adams makes a ton of them cream stout, black lager, and brown ale all rank up at the top of my list. That is along with yuengling black and tan, yuengling porter, and guiness.

I am not sure if if it has been mentioned but THIS

very well might be one of the best beers ever. I have only had it out of the bottle but my god, it packs a punch (7.2%) and tastes fantastic.

I have not tried the more expensive oaked version but i would imagine it has to be pretty good as well

i give full support to this dark beer is better while eating. I like to do steaks, burgers, brats on the weekends pretty regularly and pretty much the only thing I will accompany my meal with is dark beer (assuming im drinking). I have tried lighter beers while eating but to me it just doesnt have the same feeling.

While we are on the topic of Guiness...I would highly recommend blending it with Cleveland's own Dortmunder Gold.

Black and Gold's are amazing, you can make them yourself or I get it every time I'm at Flannery's down by the Q. They also do Black and Tan(Harp) and Black and Blue (Labbatt). Not sure if those are the right combos because I usually stick to Black and Gold but they are the bomb.

Looks a little something like

that last one just scares me. it looks like an energy drink.

and I just realized the other weekend that I had never had a 40 before. Me and my roommate were trying to figure out to get and he brought it up. of course we were in a fancy liquor store and they didnt sell 40 oz :chuckles:

holy sheet was 9.0% and woodchuck is 5.0% each of those on tap along with unlimited popcorn... damn i missed those days

Damn just 2 years ago I would go to the school bar and be able to buy a beer on tap (good beer) for 2 bucks. Then when my friend was bar tending I would get them for a buck (his tip).

I thought that was a given for anyone in the Cleveland area. Dortmunder gold is one of the few things this town has (besides the Cavs).

Busch Light. I'm poor.

and apparently a redneck, natty lite is more respectable and less trashy. only rednecks who go to NASCAR drink Bush...and if you say "its because im in college" its still not valid.

I tend to forget the actual beer variations I have tried, so I will go with the brewers I know put out quality stuff:

Stone Brewing Co.- Arrogant Bastard is a very good call. I have grown to be a fan of the less expensive Levitation Ale.

Rogue Ales- so many good varieties, I really liked the Santa's Private Reserve. Dead Man Ale pretty solid for being the bottom rung.

Sam Adams is usually a good decision- I will go with Sam if I plan on having more than 2. So many good varieties, too. Octoberfest, Cherry Wheat (even if it is a fake cherry smell), Summer Ale.

Blue Moon is another good lighter social beer, and chicks like it so it has that going for it.

If I am going ultra-cheap, then nothing beats PBR. The only piss beer I ever liked; I could never stomach, Beast, Natty, Keys, or the Red Rocket, but there was just something about PBR. Almost like when you enjoy the smell of your own fart, I guess.

Anybody try Fatheads microbrews? Their Bumbleberry Ale is so freakin' good.

Honey Blueberry Wheat. Brewed with fresh harvested spring honey stolen from some very angry bees (we have the welts to prove it) and infused with our own special painstakingly handpicked blueberry essence. A light refreshing wheat beer with a nice blueberry aroma, crackery malt flavors with a hint of sweetness and a light tart blueberry finish.

I also think their Christmas Ale was better than Great Lakes.

I have spent more money on Sierra Nevada Pale Ale than all other alcohols combined. I loved it for 15 years.
Howerver, now my favorite beer is Stone's IPA.
Stone is the best brewery in the world in my opinion.
