Starting EDGE across from Garrett is a glaring need with or without Clayborn.

The only need this cut opens up is rotational DE, which I wouldn't call 'huge'.

Most DE's are at least 280lbs...thats pretty huge.

Proof positive that all the worrying and handwrings about the cap is unwarranted. Teams find ways to keep the healthy players that they like. sure big name players sometimes hit free agency or are cut but it’s rarely the players teams feel are most essential to their success. The Saints have restructured their way from something like 70M over the cap to enough under to be able to Tag Williams.

esit: not saying we should get as far over the cap as the Saints did. That happened as a result of years of win now moves with Brees as a SB capable QB. But no one should ever treat the cap like some angel of death. It’s always flexible

Tagging someone doesn't mean the are coming back. This could very easily be a precursor to a trade, and NO want's to get something for him. That's how we got Landry in 2018.

And even if Williams does come back, the Saints have already lost a few starters and are still 45mil over the cap. They are guaranteed to lose at least a few more starters.

It’s my understanding that they literally can not tag a player until they have the room under the cap to fit cap number of the tag for that position. Maybe I’m wrong and they have until a different deadline to reach that number.

And again, I was not advocating mirroring the Saints spending habits, just pointing out that rarely in the NFL do teams lose one of the 8-10 players on their roster that they value the most.

On Adrian Clayborn, I was a big fan of the signing. The player disappointed. He certainly is no longer the guy I thought he was coming out of Iowa. He was replacement-level. I'm fine with cutting him.

I'd go so far as to argue that Porter Gustin outplayed him. I'd rather pick up anyone, and see what they can do.

Wow. Lawson would definitely shoot to the top of my wishlist.
What am I missing about Lawson? Doesn’t seem too special. He’s young but he hasn’t done much since his rookie year and doesn’t add much as a run defender.

Is there a chance you're just looking at sack totals? Lawson was one of the better, and most productive, edge rushers in football last year.

Here's a decent quick-hitter article from a Jets board: source

Despite a measly total of 5.5 sacks that will not catch the eye of the casual observer, Carl Lawson was actually one of the NFL’s most disruptive pass rushers in 2020, highlighting the misleading nature of sack totals.

Lawson racked up a tremendous total of 32 quarterback hits, second-most in the league behind only T.J. Watt‘s 41.

In total, Lawson was credited with 64 pressures, sixth-most among all players and fourth-most among edge defenders. Racking up those 64 pressures across 437 pass-rush snaps, Lawson recorded a pressure rate of 14.6%, which ranked sixth-best among the 91 edge defenders with at least 200 pass-rush snaps. Pro Football Focus scored Lawson with a pass-rush grade of 84.9 that ranked 10th-best at the position among all 201 edge defenders to appear in a game (96th percentile).

Particularly, Lawson was the NFL’s most omnipresent force from the defense’s right side, where he was tasked with battling the opponent’s left tackle on a down-to-down basis. Lawson led the NFL with 63 pressures from the right side of the defensive line. Among edge rushers, the next-closest player (Trey Hendrickson) had 48 pressures from the right side.
