Browns Aggressive in Win
Sep 18, 2005
Author: DawgBones.com
No one outside of the Cleveland Browns locker room gave them much of a chance on Sunday in Green Bay. The Packers were 6-7 point favorites entering the game, depending on what sports book you looked at. The Packers were retiring former DE Reggie White's number at halftime, nothing was in the Browns favor. Nothing except the final score Sunday evening 26-24.

The game was for the most part controlled by the Browns offense and defense. The Packers scored on their first possession of the game, but would not score again until the 4th quarter. The Browns built a 12 point lead, 19-7, only to have the Packers claw back within 2 points with just over 5 minutes to play. Trent Dilfer connected with Ruben Droughns on 3rd and 5 for 12 yards. Two plays later Dilfer connected with Steve Heiden for 62 yards and the games winning score. The Packers added a TD with 4 seconds to play to pull within 2 points, but failed to recover the onside kick, giving the Browns the win.

The win evens the Browns record at 1-1 and the loss drops the Packers to 0-2.

The Browns offense was crisp and aggressive most of the day. Trent Dilfer tallied 336 yards passing, 3 TD's and a passer rating of 131.8. It was clearly one of the best days of Dilfer's career. Perhaps more impressive then the numbers themselves was the way the numbers came. When the game was on the line Dilfer rose to the occasion and made the tough throws and the right reads.

Dilfer was not the lone star on offense however, both TE Steve Heiden and WR Braylon Edwards eclipsed the 100 yards receiving barrier. When's the last time 2 Browns receivers went over 100 yards in the same game? Who cares, they did on Sunday. Edwards showed the fans and the rest of the NFL just why the Browns drafted him at #3 overall this past April in the draft. Edwards ran a quick 8 yard slant from his own 20 late in the game, grabbed the ball and darted 72 more yards to pay dirt. The 80 yard strike was the longest play from scrimmage for the Browns since last October.

Ruben Droughns continues to impress with his strong, physical running. The Browns starting back carried the ball 15 times in the firs half, but curiously only ran 5 more times the rest of the game. The fact was the Browns were running with just enough success that the Packers had to honor Droughns ability to run which left them susceptible to the play action pass.

Heiden added 6 catches for 104 yards and 2 TD's. Heiden has become quite a weapon for the Browns over the last 2 years and has become a go to receiver for Dilfer during the 1st 2 weeks of the 2005 season.

The Browns defense was lifted by the return of starting CB Gary Baxter on Sunday. It did not take long for Baxter's presence to be felt as he picked off a Brett Favre pass in the end zone midway through the 2nd quarter to end a Packers drive. Baxter was not alone on Sunday though. The Browns were aided by a huge performance by starting LB Andra Davis. Davis amassed 19 tackles on Sunday and tipped a ball that was intercepted by Daylon McCutcheon in the 1st quarter.

The Browns defense gave up their share of yards on Sunday, many coming when the team was up by 2 scores and playing very soft. The only stat that matters tonight though is the score, 26-24 Browns win. Congratulations to head coach Romeo Crennel on his 1st victory as a head coach in the NFL. The Browns will stay on the road and head to Indianapolis to face the Colts next Sunday.

But Dilfer did not wilt under the pressure, finding Ruben Droughns for a 12-yard pick-up on a third-and-five to keep the clock moving.

My panties are in a bunch ? HMM..... I think that should go to the guy that has said "WHAT I'M MAD ABOUT IS" BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BAH BLAH BLAH.

Again football IQ is about 0 There are other reason then Ruben for why I think this. "TRUTHFUL AT BEST"

CALI STFU already...

Somebody mentions something negative about BUSH... You Blow a GASKET.. SO PIPE DOWN... :chuckles:

I should care about a fan website like dawgbones.com??

Those internet sites are the same reason why we had the Tim Couch love affair. He was a bad QB since day 1, but the love affair was on.

Im done arguing this, it's clear as day he had a horrible game, (not play well, but horrible) but you will never get off his jock so it's a waste of time.

And CDT, that breakway ability was nuts. He was stride to stride when he caught it and ended up over ten yards ahead by the time he scored. He was flying.

That wasn't the point MAC.. Basically it just shows others are thinking along the lines of what myself along with some of the others thought about yesterday.. I'm still searching for that "RUBEN HAD A HORRIBLE GAME ARTICLE".. Can't seem to find it...

Didn't play great, but he was a key contributer to the victory.. Until you can show me someone or an article that can back up your claim that "HE PLAYED TERRIBLE, AND HAD A HORRIBLE GAME" your argument is mute, and carries no weight..

I also find it funny, that i'm making a case for Ruben and so far I'M RIGHT, Yet you are still trying to shove Williams' scrub ass on us, with nothing to back it up.. "THE COACHES HAVE SPOKEN". that should tell you all you need to know..

I'm on Ruben's jock, but you're just about on the brink of Giving Birth to William's children..Defending scrubs is pointless...

You're right about one thing, you should be done arguing this, I've been telling you that for 3 weeks (it's not going too well for ya)..-- Hell, maybe the browns will end your argument for you once they cut William's ass.

Thank You.....

Wow...are you illiterate?

Please name one time that I mentioned that William should have played in this entire thread?

I never once mentioned that he should have been put in a game, I am a very big fan of letting one back play the game, because generally, a RB gets better as the game goes on. I was fine with the decision to let Rube play the entire game.

But tell me this....have you ever heard of an article calling a players performance out AFTER a win?

NO.

So no, you wont find an article criticizing a game, why would their be one? WE WON THE GAME.

His performance didnt hurt our game because Brett Favre is a bad QB, gave us great field position and took scoring chances away from his team.

If ANY player has a bad or soso game with a loss, then he will be criticized. You obviously wont get that with a W.

Probably why you didnt get any articles on Russell wiffing on tackles, just as much as Earl Little did last year. Or why you didnt see anything about the bad performance of the DL, outside of one pressure and one sack by Roye.

Did they have good games? No...but with a W, it's hard to as local press to look gloom about a W, esp in Clevelands situation as a young team with no hope.

So again, you are not right. He did not have anything close to a good game. Just because the Browns won, will not take the light off his back from me. Simply because, the hypocrits on this board, will never let me live choosing Green over Rube down, so I wont let you have any light when Rube slips up.

And he did.....to the brightfull tune of 20 carries for an eventful 50 yards.

My sister could get that. All you gotta do is fall foward and you should get three yards.

1. 6 yds.
2. 5 yds.
3. 3 yds.
4. 1 yd.
5. -4 yds.
6. 4 yds.
7. -8 yds.
8. 3 yds.
9. 8 yds.
10. 4yds.
11. 7yds.
12. 5yds.
13. 5yds.
14. 3 yds.
15. 1 yd
16. -1 yd
17. 3 yds.
18. 2 yds
19. 2 yds.
20. 1 yd.

Pathetic.

A Browns W will not outshine his bad performance.

I don't give a damn what you said, this stuff started as who is better...

So you couldn't find an article huh ? Didn't think so... Oh yeah, I love how it's Brett Favre's fault now, that's clever.. :chuckles:

Also, many will let you live with William, if that is your favorite player on the team ? and you wish him well. that is fine (I would love to see him do well, I have nothing against the guy.. just don't believe he's that good) on the other hand, you seem to want Rube to fail, so you can come back on here and slam Me for saying He is simply the better back, this is what I don't get ?

But it's clear William is not a better back, If he was he would be playing..Which if you recall, that again, is how this all started..
(it's not like we have priest holmes backing up Jamal Lewis.. )

Like Dilfer said tonight, it's not about the yards per carry, it's about the attempts.. Moving between the tackles, keeping the defense off balance- so we could use the field in our passing game.

The one thing you only focus on is his yards... That's it. You seem to want to ignore what else he does.. That's fine, it's your choice.. But those other things he did is exactly why he had a good game, and was a strong contributer to the win.

I've seen tomlinson do the same thing, (not comparing the players, just the scenario) in which he rushes for around 70 to 75 yards, but he makes critical cathes in the backfield, and he blocks..Moves the chains and runs the clock.

Lets agree to disagree like we do on the Cornerbacks.

who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Their talking about BUSH in OT--- you better race over there and put out that fire.

No, I wont agree to disagree, because you are wrong.

There wont be any articles, I explained that. if you want to be a jackass about it, that is your wish.

And the Packs loss is Favre's fault. If that is what you were getting at. You turn the ball over, you lose. He took two chances that he didnt need to take and resulted in a red zone oppurtunity lost, which is usually atleast 3 points (could be the game there, note the second play after that was a Edwards TD) and the other he ended a drive early and gave the Browns great field position. So the loss is on his shoulders, as the leader and the QB of the team, he probably feels the same way.

And how is it clear that Rube is the better player? Based soley on the fact that Romeo is letting him start? Thats debatable, but like I said, neither are good starters so I dont feel the need to discuss it.

And you think im ignoring the other things Rube did, I am not. I pointed those out earlier. Blocking for your QB and catching ARE EXPECTED. Those shouldnt be stand out things.

Now if you catch very good, like your boy LT who can snag 100 a year, then that is a little different.

But catching the ball four times and blocking, which every RB on our roster can do, is nothing spectacular and does not make up for a garbage rushing performance.

People act as if it was Rube's running that kept the Pack D in close. No...try the scouting report. No arm, lack of a big play threat, avg to below avg OL. You get to Dilfer, he isnt a good QB. That was the strategy. It worked some what in the first half, but our OL is a little bit better than expected and it is giving the WRs time to run their routes and let Dilfer find them instead of hitting the check down all the time.

Rube does have the threat to run and that did help our cause, I wont lie. He showed last year he has the ability to run and he didnt do a bad job last week against the Bengals, so the Pack had to respect it..so in that sense, he did factor into the gameplan.

But to say Rube had anything less than a bad game is not acceptable. Its like saying Lebron had a good game despite shooting 5 of 25, but his form was nice and he set nice picks and boxed out every now and then. It doesnt work that way.

But like cavincali said, we won..and im going to focus on that. You are on rubes jock, so I have nothing else to say.

I tried to end it, but you are a peach.. I know I know, this is the last time, and you are not going to say anything else... Then SHUT IT..........

I love how MAC is smarter then the coaches and players, they seem to understand what is going on as they are playing the game.

DILFER AND EDWARDS tonight on the show "BROWNS TOWN TONIGHT" were the ones saying his running kept the "D" close, so they could strike down field.. Sounds like it came from the horses mouth. (not just people)

They only played in that game, thats all.. They are not coach MAC so they must be wrong.. Braylon and Dilfer will be out of the league soon, their Football IQ is below average.

You can't even agree that we disagree on the subject (which we do).. that's like spelling your name wrong on a test.. and you called me a retard and illiterate ;) .. Looks like you fit the criteria for both... and i'm not even trying.. :chuckles: TOO EASY.......Winner.

MAC, I love you  :chuckles:

I still dont agree to disagree punk.

Now come on dumbass, Punk is a harsh word..

How about, "I don't agree with your thought on our runningback situation LePIP".

Sincerley A MAC AKA THE TRUTH

Thanks for your time A MAC... I must go and do some Crunches now..

O i know I can out crunch you...easily
