Cavaliers Trade Ideas: 2022-23 regular season edition

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Zion’s like a crazy hybrid, if you were to mix Big Baby Davis with Zach LaVine. I just don’t know that he will ever be able to control his weight and his body may not be able to handle all the forces that he places upon it.
I actually think Zion is overrated. His defense is baaaaad. You need a center who can space the floor and protect the rim to max out the team's potential with him starting. Now add in his weight, injury concerns and you can see why the Pelicans are nervous about giving him a guaranteed max deal. The Pelicans made their first post season appearance without him playing a single game this year.

Actually Griffin has gone on record publicly and said “a max extension is a no brainer”.
I’m sure he’ll get a max deal but it’ll have a lot of weight/games played clauses in it!

I know what he's said publicly, but the debate is over whether that max gets fully guaranteed or whether they structure it like Embiid and Isaac's deals.

Zion is a difference maker and he can effect the game in many ways when he’s healthy. That’s really the key with him is staying healthy. However, given his body type and the ease with which he can him weight, I have my doubts as to whether he will ever be able to stay healthy.

Giving him a max extension is a HUGE risk, but he’s gonna leave N.O. If they don’t.

I disagree with him being a difference maker. He's a great scorer inside and exciting to watch. But his defense has been horrid since coming to the NBA. He can't create for others. He can't score very well outside the paint. He hasn't been a good rebounder in the NBA. At this point he's all flash no substance.

Totally agree!!!

Zion has the potential to be a good defender. He’s got the athletic ability for certain. Showed major flashes of ability and good effort at the defensive end at Duke. His defensive effort in the NBA? terrible. My impression is he takes 70% of defensive possessions off. Looks winded. Looks lost.
It’s takes the majority of players 3 years to learn NBA defense. The guy is just an offensive juggernaut. His potential outweighs the risk of future injury. He might never be a plus Defender. He definitely won’t if he doesn’t drop 50lbs. But the Cavs could hide him on Defense with Allen and Mobley. Id give up Markkanen, Sexton, this years #1 and future #1 to get a shot at that potential. But I don’t think the Pelicans would even consider it.

Thoughts on this trade?

Cleveland receives: Cam Johnson & Dario Saric
Phoenix receives: Lauri Markkanen

Why?
Cleveland goes away from the tall line-ups in favor of a traditional small forward.
Phoenix gets a big that can stretch the floor next to Ayton.

He's basically Julius Randle. Zion can't be the primary option on offense if you're serious about winning.

Another trade I came up with:

Cleveland receives: Kevin Huerter & Jalen Johnson
Atlanta receives: Cedi Osman & 14th pick

Why?
Cleveland adds a 3pt specialist & a good wing prospect.
Atlanta gets some cap flexibility & a lottery pick.

I would pass. Huerter is a good shooter but he's a trash defender, poor rebounder. Bad fit at SG next to Garland. Guards would torch us every game.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think about the defensive side when making this trade. Thoughts on Bogdan Bogdanovic?

I would pass. He's already 30. We are ready to take the next step. But we shouldn't sacrifice the future for a 30 year old.

I’d probably do that trade, but why would Atlanta?

I actually like this one quite a bit.

Would Phoenix be able to afford Lauri's contract though?
