Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They'd be selling McNeil at by far his lowest value though. Nimmo hasn't exactly been a beacon of clean health and only has a year left before he fits free agency.
Yeah.... just what the Guardians need.. a left handed hitting middle infielder.. smh..

They can still get quite a nice return for him, especially since he has three years of control right now. Also, not playing him every day would only decrease his trade value if they would look to shop him later. I would expect Antonetti and Chernoff to be aggressive in pursuing him. Tim Britton, who covers the Mets for The Athletic, reported after the three signings yesterday that the team “is surely exploring their trade market” in reference to McNeil, Dominic Smith and JD Davis.

I wonder how much Pham and McCutchen are asking now. The RHB OF situation got a lot thinner.

The cost to participate in free agency is just out of line with the Cleveland budget. If you are going to start spreading $10-$12 million per year to serviceable guys, use that to extend Ramirez and hope that the farm system or trades using the farm system gets the other spots filled.

The cost for retaining Cal Q & Josh Naylor just increased as super 2 set at 2.116

Both are getting larger pay increases since they will be eligible for Salary Arbitration (& not simple contract renewal by the team)...

Luckily Myles Straw was at 2.112 and does not get super 2…

Baltimore is looking for more

Much more....

Like Pittsburgh with Reynolds....
........and rightfully so. Mullins is a helluva player, but I don't know if he's a good fit for Cleveland with the cost required to get him. Same goes for Reynolds.

McNeil isn’t available, not right now.

If they fail to land one of the top starters (doubt it with how much Cohen is willing to toss out) he will be.

Regardless, have to imagine they hang on to them all to see if the universal DH becomes a thing.
I had not considered this line of thinking as it relates to McNeil and the Mets - thanks , that makes sense.
I would guess the Guardians would require more than McNeil in a Plesac swap, in any case.

it is not fun in the moment, and @CDAV45 will undoubtedly be bored, but it makes a great deal of sense to wait until after the lockout when everything will be frenzied. If I had to guess as to eventual outfield acquisitions, I am still leaning toward a combo of Happ and Meadows as most likely , with A Hays as my surprise.

It's a combination of boredom and anxiety. I think most of us believe that the FO intends to address this teams needs. They don't say shit so there are no rumors to contemplate and historically they wait until the dust has settled and work through the leftovers. Those 2 factors are the reason for my angst. It just so happens that this organization has positioned itself to increase payroll significantly while having a robust farm system, but now there's likely to be a fucking lockout and the uncertainty that it has created.

I too think Happ is on the radar, but which Happ? The one that accumulated 1.6 WAR in 148 games in 2021 or the one that accumulated 1.4 WAR in 57 games in 2020? If his play is/was consistent then the 1.4 WAR in 57 games would translate to 3.6 WAR over 148 games if you want to compare Ian's last 2 seasons. Clearly Happ in LF would be an improvement even if only marginal. The real question is at what cost?

I'm sure as things reveal themselves I'll feel differently, but right now it seems as if we're in that weird spot of having some good players, but a not very good team. Which direction do they take? In one hand you have this fantastic farm system that appears to be on the verge of contributing the type of players we cannot acquire without giving them up. In the other hand we have guys like Ramirez, Bieber, Plesac, and others that could significantly add to the farm system window and potentially give us plus players at every position. I'm not arguing one way or the other. I just don't know what the actual/real best answer is. I know many feel like now is our time and I'm probably in their boat, but there is a legitimate argument for the other view.
