Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Mets had a busy day.

The now have three buy low candidates in Smith, Davis, and McNeil...all coming off down seasons and all with control.

McNeil, although left handed, fits our need for OBP...even vs LH pitching.

Davis would fit as a LF/1B option, but he is a butcher in the field.

********

I always thought that Canha would get more than many thought, but not close to $13 mil a year. It looks like FAs are gonna be more expensive than we are comfortable with, so any signing will probably be late in the off season when things get sorted out and prices go down....sorta like what happened with Encarnacion.

***********

No way Plesac is traded for McNeil. That isn't close to equal value....and it wouldn't make us a better team.

************

Bimbo is correct that the non tender deadline will be very interesting...and that any Guardians move will come out of nowhere. Cleveland fans will be the last to know...lol.

*********

Along with the three Mets, I still think that Happ and Laureano are buy low candidates.

I also would not be surprised if we acquired a catcher as the second piece in a major trade.

********

We will go with at least a seven man pen, and Tito will probably go with eight.

Right now we have seven relievers, counting Garza. Outside of Clase, there are major questions about all of them. Shrugging over the loss of Perez, Mejia, and Nelson is disingenuous. Noting that there was no trade interest in any of them at the moment we cut them is, too.

At one point they all had trade value, as did a bunch of fringe players we still have. The problem is that we consistently wait until our kids lose all trade value.

I still think we should make a strong push for Cedric Mullins. We can offer Plesac, Giminez and perhaps Nolan Jones for Mullins and a minor league pitcher our scouts like. I understand how good Mullins has become. I get it. However, Plesac is a somewhat proven young pitcher (doesn't grow on trees) and Giminez MAY become an everyday mif. Jones is a very nice prospect IF healthy. I get all of this. Seems to me to be a fair swap.

McNeil isn’t available, not right now.

If they fail to land one of the top starters (doubt it with how much Cohen is willing to toss out) he will be.

Regardless, have to imagine they hang on to them all to see if the universal DH becomes a thing.

Baltimore is looking for more

Much more....

Like Pittsburgh with Reynolds....

If they end up re-signing Baez, I would imagine that makes McNeil available after they just signed Eduardo Escobar to a two year $20 million deal.

I'm personally in the camp on not wanting to pay the price in prospects that it will take to get Mullins or Reynolds.

I think there's a legitimate shot at the Guardians having a nice 4-6 year window of competing for a championship, similar to 2013-2019. Right now we have a lot of questions but we have a lot of potential answers too.

Maybe Winker or Marte (depending on price), but otherwise I'd much rather shop for stopgaps that are FAs or require less to acquire in a trade.

Don't agree.

They currently have no bench and McNeil can play 2B, 3B, LF, RF, and in a pinch SS, and can play them all well. Even if they re-sign Baez they'll find ways to get McNeil into the lineup a good bit.

Think the only way they make him available is if they miss out on some starting pitching. He is probably their best moveable asset to acquire a decent MLB level starter.

Problem is I think they toss a bunch of money at a starter and land one of them.

Actually think they just showed their hand on Baez last night too.

Please clarify ‘Marte’…

Sterling signed late last nite with the Mets.
Ketal has a high price cost in deal with the Dbacks..

If Baez re-signs, this is their IF and OF:

1B- Alonso
2B- Baez
SS- Lindor
3B- Escobar
LF- Canha
CF- Marte
RF- Nimmo

I would then imagine their primary DH (assuming that's added to the NL) would be either Dominic Smith or JD Davis with the other one traded. They desperately need to add to their farm system, which dealing McNeil and one of Smith or Davis would help. Robinson Cano will be eligible to play this season, so they will have to find some role for him since he's completely untradeable. Luis Guillorme is fine as a utility infielder, and Cohen won't hesitate to sign a fourth outfielder on the free agent market if needed. To me, Jeff McNeil has more value for them if he can net a decent prospect return than if he's a bench player for them.

They'd be selling McNeil at by far his lowest value though. Nimmo hasn't exactly been a beacon of clean health and only has a year left before he fits free agency.
