Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not a fan of Chang as the starting 2B, and esp vs a righty...but we don't have a lefty 2B on the roster outside of Gimenez.

The other option would be to play Zimmer in left, Amed at SS, and Gimenez at 2B.

So the choice is better defense and Chang or Zimmer.

I pick anybody not named Zimmer

I 100% agree...

This alone should excite you enough, you shouldnt need the Jose extension to be excited.

August 22, 2021 New York Yankees - Scooby-Doo Bobblehead - Stadium Giveaway Exchange

Now if it was a Scrappy Doo bobblehead i would understand the need for the extension.
I’m waiting for this promotional item.

It's shortsightedness to ever think a team has enough pitching. It's also extremely foolish.

I dont and I'm not.

Plus, a bird in the hand (quality MLBer) is worth more than two in the bush (prospects).
Theoretically..

you have your choice of Mercado or Zimmer for both offense and defense with Plesac pitching

or

Jo Adell/Mitch Haniger and one of MacKenzie, Morgan or any of the AAA/AA pitchers in the Guardians system....

Which way do you go?

You want to discuss shortsightedness some more?.. Or do you think spouting a cliche that "...you can't have enough pitching..." is the panacea to making this decision?..

smh...

I highly doubt Plesac alone nets either Haniger or Adele in a trade.

according to the BTV site..Plesac would be an overpay..

Additionally.. Mark Feinsand had this to say (at MLB.com)

Mitch Haniger, RF (Mariners)
Under club control through 2022
The Mariners are looking to build on their 90-win season, and with the Astros potentially taking a step back following the loss of Carlos Correa, Seattle has its sights set on its first trip to the postseason since 2001. That said, the Mariners’ strength is in the outfield, having added Jesse Winker to a group that includes Haniger, Jarred Kelenic and top prospect Julio Rodríguez. If Rodríguez gets to the Majors and shows he can handle an everyday workload, GM Jerry Dipoto could look to move Haniger -- who will be a free agent after the season -- in an effort to fill another hole on the roster.

That hole being their starting pitching..

I'm not a fan of 1 year rentals especially for this team. Usually contenders will overpay, while we have to play the long game on limited payroll. Our chance of extending him/signing as a FA would probably be low too, with our one big move already done.

I don’t get the fascination with Adel, who has proven nothing at MLB level.

The second part is awesome, the first part is meh.
I think the team would benefit more with Gimenez at SS, Rosario in LF vs Zimmer or Mercado in LF. Chang at 2B for now. I'd rather see Chang swing than Zimmer or Mercado.

Ramirez has played 980 career games. He’s likely played less than half his career.

It’ll be all about what he does here in the second half.

This had me curious how many all time franchise records he could capture.

If we say he’s about halfway through his playing career, he’s got a very strong chance to track down quite a few. Obviously health will be the major determining factor, but who knows, he may end up going down as the GOAT for this franchise.

Glad to discuss...

1) TMac is already in the rotation.

2) Zimmer isn't a starting OF on this team.

3) Our FO isn't stupid enough to trade Plesac for either Adell or Haniger.

4) The above kinda shatters the theoretical.

Morgan isn't in the same stratum as Plesac....a giant step backward. So to trade Plesac we would need an immediate giant step forward offensively...not yet another load of maybe prospects.

BS.

All the above were trades were partly salary relief. We don't need salary relief from minimum wage.

Name the last solid SP we traded when he was making the minimum. (Hint: You will have to go back a loooooong way.)

And as explained earlier, Bieber, Civale, Plesac, and Quantrill had a ton more experience than most of the kids being looked at this year.
This is utter nonsense and if you don't know that then that's on you. This has nothing to do with salary and the simple fact that you stated they're making the minimum should have donned upon you prior to posting that silliness. Somebody's gonna have to go long before their salary is any kind of issue. Deal with it and your comparison is apples to oranges so go back as far as you want because there hasn't been this kind of SP depth in my lifetime. If they can't survive without 1 pitcher like Plesac then they're fucked anyway. Good grief.

The one big move was a signing that takes on no more money for two years.. If the development of the prospects are what they should be.. then for 2023 (also with no payroll change) will either realize the results & production of the internal candidates.. or a repeat can be contemplated. Either way.. the Guardians get a bona fide ML OF'er to put in the lineup before or after JRam in the order.. This at a cost of one SP that the Guardians have significant depth to cover..or should..

We sort of agree.. and share the concern over a one year rental.. Who knows.. another extension might be offered if (big IF) the new ownership partner sees, appreciates & wants to DUPLICATE the positive feedback in the NE Ohio area and across the nation regarding extending a fan favorite like JRam or the OF'er acquired for the SP?..

We'll see..
